One more piece of advice if you happen to be armed and shooting back. Never shoot them until you think they are dead. Shoot them until they think they are dead.

My concealed carry class in North Carolina stressed that in a hostile situation, our first duty was to leave the area.

They did not over the hide and fight that were covered in the link.
