then eats only the head? I found my two largest cats [barn cats] dead and be-headed this morning. Both were outside, about 75 feet apart and only the heads missing.

New York state , could be a Fisher , lots of them to the North of you . They are a nasty piece of work , kiss your cats or small dog goodbye if one of them is around .

I'm 76 years old and have only seen 2 fishers in my lifetime, so possible. Local game warden thought bobcat or coon. Don't especially like cats but about 20 of them show up to be fed every morning.

I never saw one until 10 years ago , my farther in law (ex trapper ) pulls one out of the freezer to show me ,since then maybe half a dozen more. My understanding some of the provinces and States re- introduced them years ago and the demise of small farms , that go back to bush helped them re-populate. Our barn cats have all disappeared over the last few years and we have seen one around lately. I saw him across the fence last week in the neighbors field , of course I didn't have the shotgun with me , next time if he's in the open he won't be so lucky
