What are you doing today, II

We tried to get to camp last night didn't even get out of the state park camp ground 6" ice on road, more snow in the forecast for Sunday in to Monday.
my grandson and I cleaned out our rusted out burn barrel cut out the top of the new one it had some oil in it so he burnt some trash in it to get rid of oil before we poke some holes in sides and bottom.

I'm heading out to a city wide scouting event. It's the annual Kub car rally. We've spent the past month building wooden cars and 18 wheelers to race down a wooden track kinda like a soapbox derby. I work with the kids 11-17. We built 18 wheelers while the younger kids build cars.
A few pictures from the rally. My truck ended up winning every race and first place overall in my class. The leaders raced against the older youth.

I finished cutting and splitting the 50-year-old white pine we had cut down last fall.
When the Tree cutters were done felling it they had cut it into 30" or so pieces to transport to have it shredded. A cost to them. I ask them to let me have the pieces.
This week I have been cutting them into 15" to 16" pieces and splitting them into Firewood. I ended up with more than a face chord of pine firewood for the outside patio campfire. I won't burn this pine in the house fireplace because pine soot's up the flues.

Some of these were more than 25.0" in diameter but a splitting maul and sledgehammer did the deed. Yesterday and today about five hours all together. Them suckers were heavy, but I got it done.
Back is out.
I'm beat

Build steps. Since a bout with meningitis 12/20, I am officially disabled. Besides the host of other issues, my balance is off, can’t stand on one leg and walk like a minion. I have 2 tractors that I can’t get in/up on without the aid of stairs. I plan on having steps placed everywhere I plan on parking, especially at the newly constructed pond. Big plans this year. Oh by the way, I’m a big guy so they gotta be HD 😉. Just finished some Wood Duck nesting boxes. Been playing with some AI too (tractors)

Got out Saturday for our somewhat annual Bravo run. Wasn't the nicest day, overcast and hard to see and about-20-25 but still had a great day. Getting a bit rough as we had a few windy days with cold temps so some of the drifts are hard. Must have rode between 30-40 miles. Started out at a friend's cabin, swung by mine then back to his for supper and cards and a couple drinks.

Cool bravos. I remember those from the 80s. A bravo was hi tech compared to the old 69 yamaha sl338 with boggie wheel suspension that I grew up riding until the 90s. We also had a 73 allouette with boggie suspension. The body ended up rusting out on it in the 90s. 😆. Took the engine and put it into an old arctic cat lynx chassis. Ran for another few years. Couldn't kill it.

Apparently this morning is water system maintenance morning. 🙄 joys of wells. The water kicks out every few months as the well drains down. The issue is iron in the water that builds a sludge over time in the toilet tanks. They trickle and drain the well down. The water kicked off last night on our daughter while in the shower. Still had issues this morning so I tackled cleaning out all 4 toilet tanks in the house. Other than that, I'm waiting for a follow-up call from my doctor about mri results. Then scouts this evening.20260302_090114.jpg

Do you run a whole house filter? And is that in line before your water softener?

I run my well through a simple filter, depending on useage the filters can last 1 to 3 months. When I pull them out they are loaded with a rusty colored 'clay'. The filtered water goes into my water softener, which is cranked up pretty high, I can't recall the setting but I have a LOT of iron in my water. I also use the salt that removes iron in my softener.

We had a water softener but it wasn't doing anything so we deleted it from the system. The previous owners had it bypassed as they said it wasn't making any difference. We have a 10x5 and a 20x5 filter. I changed the 10" as it's what I had. The iron deposit builds up over months. We had the water tested and it's within drinking specs as is with just the two filters.

Just a thought, but there are dedicated iron removing systems, you may want to look into those.

As for the water softener not working well, it could be it was an under-capacity unit. They are rated for different levels of hardness and iron removal. Might want to look into a water softener that has a lot more capacity than the one you removed?

Test your water.
The results will indicate what you need.
If it's well water. It needs a softener. And filters.
Do you drain your water heater regularly? Without treatment, it's probably full of silt. And if electric, the could are poetically cakes with calcium and other mineral deposits

I always try to take two walks every day.
This evening my friend April and I took our longer walk at Oakwood Park, but we stay out of the deep wooded area in the back part.

Coming home, I turned around and captured the moon.
Before that we could see the coyotes walking around back there.

Big moons, (coyotes) and working in Healthcare don't mix.

Which is why I was thrilled to have tonight off.

Yowza. Ain't it purdy?

My daughter is going ice fishing with the school in a couple days and needed some fishing gear so we snowmobiled to our fishing shack tonight to pick them up, we could have just drove in to get it but what fun would that be?? Absolutely beautiful evening for riding, a lot warmer than my ride on Saturday and so bright with the full moon.

Rainy day here. Doing some paperwork and trying to wrap up taxes (income taxes are done, just need to pay County & Local).

Daughter bought some "gaming cards"? Like baseball cards but this is for comics. Paid $21 for a pack of cards. One of the cards is selling for over $1000 so she's pretty happy. Now to figure how best to sell it. Do you get a 1099-K or similar for something over $600?

I got burned bad a decade or more ago. Sold a Carver TFM55 amplifier. Guy paid with PayPal. Claimed he got a box of bricks. They took my money. PayPal sucks.
So now I only sell for cash. I've had people from other states have freinds come over with cash. So it can be done. Just narrows the base a bit.

For now, she's just going to say what she has and see what shops will offer her for it. I suggested cash and some sort of store credit so she doesn't have to deal with a 1099.

I don't want her meeting someone 1-on-1 for a trade. For a cash buyer (outside of a reputable shop), I want to be there for "protection" or make sure she's in a public/safe environment.

Dealing with steroid induced "brain fog" from high doses of steroids. I actually cut down the dosage by 1/3rd today and will stick with this dose for another week. The fogginess in my brain has me slightly less alert than normal. Today is better, with the stepped down dose. Next week the dose is cut by 50% and should be better. Doctor says it is not unexpected.

I'll be heading to Purdue tonight for fencing practice, not sure, but the lovely Mrs_Bob is pushing to drive me down there.

Did odds and ends around the house this morning. Grocery store and post office after lunch.

So nothing much.

I HATE steroids. My MD gave me some to calm a pinched nerve. I couldn't walk the next day. Something called AVN and I needed a hip replacement. Fired that doctor.

We has Flexible Instruction Day (no school) we had about 1/4" ice on everything so no bus driving today, as I was making my breakfast We got a call to assist another company for over turned truck that slipped on the ice and went in to the woods.
We got on the road it was updated to 2000 gallon propane truck leaking driver trapped.
This turned out to be a all day affair the other crew moved the steering column out of the way he climbed out him self but still took a ride to hospital.
Now to dealing with the leak we just kept a water spray on it to keep the vapor way from the equipment waiting for another empty truck to transfer the propane to, and the 2 tow trucks got rigged to roll it over when transfer was done. get back to the station wash the truck off back home after 6 hours starving. roads were still icy in spots when we were leaving.
Hoping for better day tomorrow.
