The "Gubmint Shutdown" has begun... What Departments are Open... Which are Closed?

Any new income offsets the deficit. It was over 2 trillion
The US annual budget deficit for the fiscal year 2025 was $1.78 trillion, with the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reporting a slightly different, rolling 12-month deficit of $1.74 trillion between November 2024 and October 2025. This deficit resulted from revenues of $5.2 trillion and outlays of $7.0 trillion.

That is not what I find.

What I find is that our "deficit" is indeed approximately $1.8 Trillion. So your number and my number seem to be close enough. That is our ANNUAL DEFICIT for this year.

But the income from the Trump Tariffs is much lower annually. Tariff income is projected to be between $300 and $500 Billion.

LONG TERM it is possible that the tariffs could equal a cumulative total of $1.8 Trillion for 10 years.

But the deficit is $1.8 Trillion for THIS YEAR alone!
  • Year-to-date (through September 2025): Approximately $215 billion in total tariff revenue, with September alone contributing over $31 billion. Earlier estimates through August put it at $213.3 billion, while projections for the full calendar year suggest around $300–500 billion annually, depending on implementation and economic effects.

  • Fiscal Year 2025 (October 2024–September 2025) impact: Customs duties rose by about $22 billion compared to FY 2024, helping offset other revenue declines. Long-term projections estimate $2.4 trillion over the next decade (conventional scoring), though dynamic effects (e.g., reduced GDP growth) could lower this to $1.8 trillion.
