I ran into the same thing. Previous owner used 1.5" square tube. I had to taper them. Much better in all conditions. Grass is a problem even with the stock grousers I'm told. it catches and doesn't play well.

I did think about blocks in the middle but I dont think it would be too successful - a lot of work to cut them all down but the best solution I think.
The hubs are a repair made by Alex MacLarty I think - I have seen a couple of other Scottish machines with the same star wheel - the brake drum is behind that plate and the plug would be for adjusting the brakes except this machine had inboard brakes - the outer brake drums have nothing inside them.

Yes, it fixes two common problems, the ears snapping off the cast brake drum and wear on the drive spline - as its plain steel you can weld in a new splined hub which you can't with the cast brake drum.
