No Wonder Soccer is not a USA favorite

Other than the last few minutes of OT last night -- 2 goals scored by Italy over Germany -- the last three games played in the World Cup had a combined scoring of only 1 goal.

I don't believe soccer will ever make it big in the US. The mindset of a majority of sports fans here in the US is to see events with much more scoring during a game. Ice Hockey is just marginal as far as scoring goes, and it is one of the least popular games watched here.

Am I all wet, or do other's see my point of view and agree?

I think that's a good observation. I don't understand that mindset, but agree it exists. Hockey and soccer are similar and both sports, I believe, you can try to protect the lead once you have it. You play the trap in hockey which is dull and in soccer you play like the World Cup. I don't think any of those teams took any chances to risk giving up a goal. Then it comes down to the penalty kicks.

Last year, the NHL introduced a bunch of rules to make the game higher scoring with less interference. I'd say I like the result although I originally opposed it, thinking it was meant to make the game more appealing to the US market.

But what about a classic "pitcher's duel" in baseball where there is little scoring? Isn't that entertaining?

To a true baseball fan, this is very entertaining -- just as soccer is to a true soccer fan.

But to the masses of the US population these are 'boring' -- for most don't really understand the game(s) or appreciate that athletic talent they are watching.

Hockey used to be better when there were good fights. When they stopped all the fighting they took a lot of the spirit out of the sport.

Just my opinion though.

I thought soccer would gain popularity in the US since just about all young kids now play it. That has been going on for 20 or more years now, but it still does not have a big following. I've heard before it was because of the low scoring, but I also wonder if we are not already overloaded with pro sports and soccer is the newest kid on the block.
While I appreciate the talent involved, and the conditioning of the athletes, the sport itself makes me yawn. I'd rather watch girls play beach volleyball. :D

Soccer is popular among kids because anyone can play and if you suck, you can kind of hide out on the field. The moms get to show up to games and practices and chat with each other -- the perfect fit.

As the kids get older and enter high school, only the good kids stick with it, and those that do not probably will not be that big of soccer fans later in life.

These are just the views of Gatorboy -- FF does not necessary share these views.

Soccer (football) is uniformly popular throughout the world (except in the USA), but the fans sure are different in the different countries.

Which grandstand would you rather be in? Turkey or Brazil?

Good one Dave

Soccer here is growing in popularity, to the point I think or local code Aussie rules (AFL) admin would have to be starting to get concerned.
One of the reasons kids play soccer is because parents don't want them playing a contact game.

It's bad enough that the World Cup is on the tv to the exclusion of most interesting programmes, personally I am sick of it. I don't like sport much of any kind, now it has crept its way in here! Won't I be glad when the football and Wimbledon have finished, good job I have a computer and Sky television!

Exactly!

To me, the other yawners:
Golf
Billiards
Poker
Any sport where the commentator is whispeing.:puke1:

And the other end of the spectrum - curling.:yum:
I about bust a gut when I see that "sport" being played.

I agree with 2 out of 3 -- I can sit and watch golf with great interest. Much more interesting than NASCAR.

Brightly colored cars crashing into one another is more interesting than chasing a white ball around a nicely mowed field.

Seriously, I don't really care for either one... but I would watch either of those before I sat through professional bowling on television.
