Multi-factor authentication - WTF

I went to sign into my insurance companies site this morning.
They're REQUIRING MFA. That alone pisses me off but OK, I'll add the option to get a call or text.
NOPE
The options are "Device Biometrics/Passkey" or "Authenticator App".
I'm old, my devices are old and I don't play with any of this new crap.
I call the ins co.
They said my devices are too old (Win 7, old android phone) to use most of these options (but I could probably install an authenticator app which I DON'T want to do).

I asked why the change and so stringent. They said it's because some States require this now and they only have one site so now everyone has to do this. On further probing, she told me it was because NEW YORK now requires this. Friggin nanny state is now dictating how multi-state companies have to do their logins and inconveniencing everyone.

Who in hell wants into my auto insurance site to pay my bill????

I've run into the same thing. Not only with insurance but with Britbox, Starlink and others.

Ya, who is going to go to a site and pay my bill ??? I don't do online banking and the insurance co. is so secure they don't even tell their mailing address *rolleyes*

yeah, it's getting to be BS. VA does it too, and they outsource it to a third party. what could go wrong?

every, EVERY!!! VA data breach has been their fault, not users, and who has to pay for it? I do. f'ing bs.

Install the authenticator app. Better yet install the app 1Password and use it to store your one-time passwords.
MFA is nothing to be scared of and it is more secure. If you want to be really secure and paranoid get a hardware key like Yubikey.

Email and SMS/Text MFA can be compromised.
