HARVARD reject's D.E.I. demands, Risks losing $9 BILLION in Funding for Research Grants & Studies

This will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Harvard has the largest endowment of any university. They can afford to take a hit, not sure how much they can afford if there is a prolonged, year after year, battle over research grants, but, they can better withstand some hits than most schools.

Harvard University on Monday rejected demands by the Trump administration to eliminate its DEI programs and screening international students for ideological concerns, putting nearly $9 billion in federal funding for the university at risk.
“No government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue,” Harvard President Alan Garber wrote in a note to the university community.
“Although some of the demands outlined by the government are aimed at combating antisemitism, the majority represent direct governmental regulation of the ‘intellectual conditions’ at Harvard,” Garber said.
Harvard’s rejection comes after the Trump administration sent Harvard a list of demands as part of its review of nearly $9 billion in government funding for the school.
The administration demanded the elimination of diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and called for screening international students for purported support of terrorism, anti-semitism and hostility to “the American values and institutions inscribed in the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence.”
The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
The White House has zeroed in on colleges and universities as part of its crackdownon DEI programs nationwide since President Donald Trump regained office in January.
The Trump administration earlier this year cut $400 million in funding for Columbia University over its handling of the pro-Palestinian protests that erupted on campus.
Columbia University acquiesced to many of the White House’s demands.
The White House last week also halted more than $1 billion in federal funding for Cornell University and roughly $790 million for Northwestern University.

“No government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue,”

And no government, regardless of which party is in power should even be paying $9B to a private university.

POOF!

Harvard just lost BILLIONS

Harvard Hit With $2.2 Billion Funding Freeze After Defying Trump

The Trump administration followed through on its threat to pull federal funding from Harvard University hours after the oldest and richest US college refused to agree to a list of new government demands.
The government froze $2.2 billion of multi-year grants to Harvard, according to the Joint Task Force to combat antisemitism. The Trump administration last month said it was scrutinizing as much as $9 billion in federal grants and contracts as part of its efforts to combat antisemitism on US campuses.
The stakes for Harvard escalated late last week, when the Education Department and other US agencies sent it a letter requiring a series of changes including the disbanding of diversity, equity and inclusion programs and an audit of students, faculty, staff and leadership for “viewpoint diversity.” The government also wanted changes to programs “with egregious records of antisemitism” and quarterly reports until 2028.
Harvard, which has an endowment of $53 billion, said in a defiant letter Monday that it wouldn’t surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights.
“Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government,” the university said in a statement. Harvard President Alan Garber said the government’s demand “makes clear that the intention is not to work with us to address antisemitism in a cooperative and constructive manner.”
“Harvard’s statement today reinforces the troubling entitlement mindset that is endemic in our nation’s most prestigious universities and colleges – that federal investment does not come with the responsibility to uphold civil rights laws,” the task force wrote in a statement. . . . .

why in the hell are we funding any private university school or institution with our taxes. Has anybody even read the constitution

The fallacy is that Harvard called itself a "private institution." Receiving $9 Billion from the taxpayers makes them a tad less then fully private. We the People should refuse to fund an "education" in why America is bad.

Harvard is defiant.

I'm OK with them being defiant.

If they are a private institution then they don't need any of my tax dollars.

But they have the right to do as they wish. Seems like the NYPost article below is in agreement with a great many people. Let Harvard do what it wants to do, but they must do it with their own money. If they want to be Jew haters, let them lead the nation in anti-semitism and hate, with their own money. If they want to cheer on HAMAS atrocities and throwing gays off of buildings, let them cheer for HAMAS, with their own money.

Harvard may be free to target Jews — but not on the taxpayers’ dime

Harvard University is thumbing its nose at Team Trump and refusing to take steps to stamp out Jew-hatred and discrimination on its campus.
Fine. Then, let it say good-bye to federal bucks — possibly as much as $9 billion a year’s worth — and start spending its own money instead.

Should Jew-hating Harvard keep getting US funds?

The school, which in 2023 also saw the Supreme Court slap down its discriminatory admissions policies, huffs that it won’t let government “dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.”
In truth, Trumpies essentially just want Harvard to comply with civil-rights laws and the top court’s 2023 ruling.
But if the antisemites and racists that hold sway over the Ivy League school refuse to reform, taxpayers have no obligation to keep up funding.

Indeed, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act effectively bans federal funds for schools that discriminate.
In fact, Harvard is a hotbed of leftism, with overwhelmingly left-leaning faculty and staff and a DEI culture that regards Jews, Israel, America and the West as oppressors.
That does neither students nor the nation much good.
Worse, the school employs blatant double standards: It would never, for example, permit the kind of post-Oct. 7 hostility shown to Jews on campus if it were targeted at, say, blacks instead.
Harvard may have a legal right to operate as a leftist bastion hostile to Jews, America and the West.
But US taxpayers don’t have to pay for it.
The Trumpies should to shut Harvard’s federal spigot ASAP.
Let the school tap its $50 billion endowment — and see its reserves shrink, along with donations from alums who now see what they’re giving actually supports.
The sooner these bigots run out of money, the better off everyone else will be.
