Harley-Davidson is bleeding, several dealerships closed in 2020, the product line has been dramatically trimmed. The electric LIVEWIRE didn't set the sales world on fire by bringing NEW customers into dealerships but instead sold to existing aging riders who had an extra $30,000 in their pocket.

But now something else new is coming and, if H-D markets it properly, it will appeal to the riders of the fastest growing class of motorcycles in the world. The ADV-Touring class of riders, those who want a bike that can cross a country, regardless of if there is road under their tires or not. Truth be told, 99% of these buyers take tarmac to Starbucks and never see a mountain pass, but these bikes can take on logging roads, forest trails, and open desert.

BMW GS1250 is the 'king of the hill' in this class of bikes that includes bikes from KTM, Honda, Triumph, Moto-Guzzi, Ducati, Yamaha and others. They look like over-bloated dirt bikes, but at home on the highway. They are tall in the saddle, seat heights are typically 32" or high, ground clearance is high too. Riding position is upright and they turn on a dime, capable of doing figure-8s in a tight parking lot or working its way through trees in the woods. And HARLEY-DAVIDSON finally has a bike that can compete in the growing category instead of clawing for space in its shrinking cruiser category and aging customer base.

Harley-Davidson Pan America Tours Europe and Pre-Orders Begin
 Several dealers overseas already taking pre-orders ahead of spring Launch.

Imagine it’s early spring 2021. Everything unprecedented about 2020 is behind us. Blissfully, your most pressing question today is which adventure bike to ride and to where.

Well, there might be one unprecedented matter left in the cards that plays out next year, and that’s Harley-Davidson’s odd-ball Pan America, a long travel adventure touring mount powered by an all-new liquid-cooled 60-degree 1250cc “Revolution Max” V-twin said to produce 145 hp and 90 ft-lbs of torque, due to hit dealerships around the world early next spring. The 2021 timing, an adjustment after management changes at Harley, combined with Covid-related supply chain and production delays, preempted its original Fall 2020 release.

The Pan America will be a Harley the likes of which the world has never seen before, and some around the world are getting a sneak peek this fall as at least one near-production ready model circulates through dealerships in Europe. Why Europe? It might have something to do with Harley’s encouraging Q3 report, which shows sales in Europe on the rise, offsetting the bad news that sales in the U.S. are down eight percent.

The prototype we see making the rounds in France, Spain, Italy and Holland looks identical to the bike revealed at the EICMA show in Milan last year, suggesting a robust build with off-road intentions as illustrated by its spoked wheels, Michelin/H-D co-branded knobbies, burly skid plate, crash bars, bolt-on rear sub-frame and brush guards.

The Pan America’s suspension appears to be semi-active and we expect the bike to offer a suite of rider aids and switchable modes navigated via the big TFT screen evident in the photos. We also see a manually-adjusted windscreen and switchgear that promises cruise control and an infotainment platform. Brakes are Brembo with four-piston calipers up front and a single disc out back.

That massive 60-degree V-twin, a configuration intended to rumble, will act as a stressed frame member, though Harley has said an “internal counter balancer” will help dampen uncomfortable vibration. Final drive is a chain.

Some dealers in Italy have recently started taking pre-orders of the Pan America and we hear several customers have already signed the dotted line, though it’s not clear when the option to order will be available to shoppers in America.

A video released last November featuring a skilled rider tearing up some optimal off-road landscapes proves Harley’s prototypes are ride ready, and though the look is pure Mad Max movie prop, the bike appears to be very capable. It also appears to offer a lowish seat height that will appeal to some.

Though technically still in prototype form, we assume little will change about the model at this late stage. The official price of the Pan America has not been announced yet. Best guess is it will be close in cost to BMW’s $17,995 (base) 2021 R1250GS, the model this Harley seems most aligned with in features, performance and brand sway. Weight may likewise be in the big GS’s range.

With some luck, the most “unprecedented” thing about 2021 might be Harley-Davidson’s Pan America. Even more of a shocker if Harley’s entry turns out to be a viable adventure bike. Now that would be novel!

Looking at the photos this bike is pre-set for some custom luggage boxes and the mounting frames are already in place. Looks like a rear frame support may need to be added for a top box to hold the helmet. This is the first H-D that really appeals to me, but with the large 1250cc engine carrying so much weight up high I'd bet this is one top-heavy ADV-Touring motorcycle. The brush guards look to be plastic without an aluminum or steel spine to offer real protection, something that if true, will draw criticism. The trend in the ADV-Touring bikes is to grow the engines into the 1100 to 1250cc range for brand's "flagship" models, but there is a larger category in the sub-1000cc range and H-D previously announced they will be offering a lighter version of this same bike... but no date projected. For the long term, an investor in H-D would hope that H-D brings out a 750cc to 900cc range bike as the mass market offering for people who don't want to push around a tall and top heavy nearly 600# motorcycle (with luggage cases set for travel). With a presumed "list price" of roughly $18,000, this is a high price ADV Touring bike, add options and its likely to be selling for roughly $22,000, give or take.

No clue if H-D will offer anything to compete with the quick shift/clutchless shifting options of the BMW GS bikes or the DCT option found on the Honda Africa Twin and NCx series bikes. One would hope they have a selling point that is more than the brand name.

In the US, and worldwide, outside of the small bike markets, the ADV-Touring bikes are growing in sales and have been for the past 10-12 years. H-D avoided this segment to its peril.

In the new AppleTV series featuring Star Wars actor Ewen McGregor and his friend Charlie Boorman, they ride H-D LIVEWIRE electric bikes from the tip of South America to Los Angeles. The LIVEWIRES were no stock bikes off the sales floor. They were heavily modified with parts from the PAN AMERICA, using front forks and other bits from the ADV-Touring bike. It will be interesting to see if H-D can capitalize on all of this. I hope so.
