Electronic Ignition??

Anyone have any experience with electronic ignition conversion? I just installed a Pertronix in my Thiokol 1404. Curious what (if any) issues folks may have had?

The only Pertronix I ever worked with was one I installed on a 1953 Ford truck. The owner says it runs great.

We did the installation and it ran really great.....until it didn't. No fire to distributor now and I think the ignitor module may have fouled. Didn't leave the key on (which is a common problem). Got 12.8V at the coil, but nothing to distributor.

I'm showing 13 ohms resistance within the ignitor module itself (not the coil), but don't know if this is right. Maybe should be 0 ohms? Electrical gremlins....!

I did my bombi and the coil failed . later I found out you should use the coil they sell.
other than that it worked fine.

I installed a Pertronix unit on my 1404 Imp about six years ago and have been quite happy w/ the performance and reliability. It starts faster and more reliably than when I had points and I'm more comfortable relying on a solid state module than mechanical points.

I did have the coil go bad a few years ago -- it developed hairline cracks on the top and was shorting out against the case. It was a real head-scratcher till I notice the arcing and found the crack. My suspicion is that heat caused the failure, so when I installed the new coil I mounted it a little further away from the exhaust pipe. No problems since.

what motor---- I did a ford----I took a ford electronic dist. wired a chevy ignition module and wired it in line----(ford brain boxes suck)--it works great and is reliable----easy to get the parts also------the only place I had trouble was that it needs to be screwed down to a ground

Thinking of heading that way. Checked out Pertronix web site...really difficult to narrow down the part number but ended up searching for Saab Sonett 1968-1974 and came up with part number 1847V. Curious what part you ended up with.
Do you still have your 1404 and running with the Pertronix?

I sold the 1404 a few years ago. The Petronix wasn’t working for me so I had to go back to standard.

I don't have the Pertronix distributor, I have another brand, but I do have the Pertronic coil for 8 cyl and less than 7 ohms resistance. I would like to stress that every power supply to these electronic carbs and coils should go through a 4 wire relay. The protection it offers is worth the trouble. Especially for those that venture far from a pick up point or repair shop. It cost me about $800 and lots of time to replace stuff that was not behind a relay on my Tucker when I was using the Dodge regulator set up. I also switched to the three wire GM alternator.

I've posted a similar reply on the other thread, but I believe I installed a Pertronix 1847 kit in my 1404 Imp back in 2010. Other than replacing the coil (mentioned above) it has been completely reliable since.

1847V seems to be the one for 1404 Imps. Also Pertronix has a couple other series with added features, 71847v and 91847v. The newer versions address the module burnout issue if leaving the ignition key on. Hit their website for specifics. I'll be installing one plus their coil this summer.

I have plans on swapping in a hei distributor on the 223 in my 601, just need to make some time to get it done. Adios points. The ford 300 distributor will work with a few mods. Tried pertronix, had issues and went back to points for the time being.

Do you need a 300 distributor? I have a complete electronic system from ours.

Thanks for the offer, but I have one already. I just need to shorten the shaft, change the pump drive to1/4", and Reem the drive gear to fit on the 300 dizzy.
