it's faily simple really. I used two black plastic bins called Soil Maker. Just place the material in layers, keep it moist and aerate ocassionally.
I stopped using mine because it attracted voles and the little bastards ate all my tulip and aisiatic lilly bulbs, most of my hosta's and red sedum too.
You must keep the pile in a different location each year or the tree roots will invade.
I never used fertilizer though, all that went in was a balanced mix of dried oak leaves, green grass clippings and kitchen scraps accompanied with all the weeds pulled from the garden. Caution, if the pile doesn't get hot it won't kill the weed seeds.
You need to balance the carbon with the nitrogen, Google it.
