Brake rotors are not disposable (like brake pads)!?!?

One of the Mazda's needed new brakes. I'm at the FL condo and don't have tools so I took it to a shop.
They said that on newer vehicles, the brake rotors are considered a normal wear item and need replaced when you replace the pads.
Never heard of that.
He did show me how thin they are now.

hmmm. . . never heard of that but I tend to agree with Fred, seems like a great way to ding owners while at the same time creating a new income stream for the dealership.

Benz does it this way:
Job 1 front pads
Job 2 front pads. Front rotors, rear pads
Job 3 front pads
Job 4 front pads & rotors, rear pads & rotors
Replace brake fluid every two years.

Fortunately, unless you have a black series car, the parts are cheap.

How many miles on the vehicle and which Mazda model? Had ours done by the dealer on our 2015 CX5 at about 120,000 miles. Rotors were okay.

It's something new that many mfgr's are doing starting about 5-7 years ago.
It's a 2020 CX-5 with about 35K miles.
And don't get me started on dealer service pricing. They wanted around $1000/axle to do the rotors and pads.
New rotors/pads per axle are around $100 and take about an hour to install.
