Several people have died due to a listeria outbreak, which led to a massive lunchmeat recall.

The source of the problem has now been discovered, and that caused 1 more casualty. Liverwurst will no longer be available from Boars Head.

It was quickly found that only 1 meat processing plant was involved in the recall. What was unknown was what was the actual cause, the source. Turns out that the source was the processing area for Liverwurst. Also turns out that Liverwurst is not a popular item for Boars Head. So they are eliminating the lunchmeat offering completely, which also eliminates possible future contamination from that production.

Boar's Head ditches liverwurst, a once-popular sandwich staple that Americans no longer stomach

Liverwurst is dropped from product line in wake of product recall and declining popularity

Boar’s Head liverwurst has lined its last lunchbox.
Boar’s Head announced this past Friday that it will stop making the deli counter’s most controversial cold cut.
Liverwurst is a victim of the fallout from a listeria outbreak that led to a massive product recall.
"Our investigation has identified the root cause of the contamination as a specific production process that only existed at the Jarratt (Virginia) facility and was used only for liverwurst," the company said in a statement.
"With this discovery, we have decided to permanently discontinue liverwurst."

So change the damn process!!! Fully cook it. Plus 1 degree plus 1 minute. They were doing something stupid, and their QA group plus all the various outside inspectors should have caught. Fire them all! And the USDA inspectors on site.
Way too many failed in noticing this food safety issue. Whatever it was. But knowing what I know about liverwurst, they missed a heat treatment somewhere.

I don't eat Liverwurst but I prefer smaller butchers my Scrapple butcher closed 2 years ago and I haven't found anyone comparable.
I've tried a few big manufacturers but isn't the same.
A couple farmers make it around here and I'm going to hit them up for a loaf or 2 to see how theirs is.

UDSA inspectors will shut you down for a burnt-out bulb in the bathroom, (true story) but actually monitoring processes for food safety to protect the public,,,; Not so much.

Processors have to pay the salaries of these on site "inspectors." But there is no way they can hold them accountable for not doing their job.

Been on the food business my entire career.

USDA did their job. Most did it well. Some were over zealous. But they watched the processes. Particularly heat treatments and cooling logs.

FDA was a joke.

We obviously have had different experiences.

I dealt with FDA and USDA. I never had a recall with any of my company products. Cannot say that for several places of which I am aware. I resigned from one company, it was so bad. I could not put my name and reputation to it.

USDA inspectors' are on site and the company payroll. FDA are not. No excuse for USDA people to miss something major.
