Back Pain

About Two weeks ago I fell over backwards and landed on the small of my back on a frame . I had it checked out with the Doc and nothing is broken .I also had a accident in the mid 1990's that left my back broken in 4 places , and my back is fused .
Since my fall ,I can only lay down for about 1 hour at a time maximum . Sleep comes in little amounts .4 hours of total sleep is a good night now .I can sit and work on my little rolling seat stool ,in the shop, and it does not brother me too much . But if I lay down for a hour and the pain is off the scale . I thought it would go away by now or at least go down on the pain scale , but it has not deminished a bit . I spend about 2 hours each morning trying to get the swelling down and mobility back . Any thoughts or experts out there ever have anything like this ? It is starting to wear me down .

That's horrible news, Al. I had some muscle-related back pain which was handled with medication and rest. The medication was heavy - and I needed it to alleviate the pain so that I could rest. If you can't find any relief with medication, then I would tend to think it was a disc problem. A friend of mine had a ruptured disc with symptoms similar to yours. He had a surgery called a discectomy and he is now back in fine shape. Did you get a referral from your GP? What kind of medicine did he prescribe? Some combination of anti-inflammatory and severe pain - like percocet/oxycontin.

I don't know the name of the pain killers( a little oblong pill) but ice seems to be best for getting the swelling down a bit . I try not to take pain killers as they sometimes create more problems than they are worth .

I have to be careful with any meds I take as I lost half my heart from a virus that attacked it a few years ago ,so all meds must be cleared by my cardio Doc.

Well... if it the back does not reside a little on the pain soon ,I think I better go back and have him take another look .

Definitely time for a second opinion. I would look for a specialist or someone that would come highly recommended for the back pain you are having to deal with at this time. The longer you have to fight the pain the harder it is to get over the problem.

Massage therapy can do wonders for temporary relief but is probably not going to solve the problem. I would look at message therapy to help you to control pain and with the daily mobility problem until a solution can be found to solve the problem.:thumb:

Yeah ,your proably right . One thing I did not mention and really do not know any other way to say is ," If the urge for a bowel movement comes on, the pain goes way up" . Once I have completed my business with the bathroom the pain goes down ??????? Wierd huh ???

Al.......I too have back problems and a friend of mine recomended I try doxepin (spelling might not be exact). It's used for a sleep aid/anti depressant mostly, but has a side effect of relieving back pain. One capsule will make you drowsey & give you a great nights sleep & you shouldn't plan on doing anything the next morning either. I think it works by relaxing everything for awhile & relieving muscle spasms. Here's more info: back pain It worked for me !

I would guess that would probably indicate you have damaged soft tissue like muscle or tendons more than bones???? Still serious, seek treatment ASAP or at least a second opinion from a qualified source.

Al, I'm no expert but over the past 3yrs I've been battling low back pain from degenerative disk disease (L-4 & 5).. When I moved into my current house, I tweeked my back.. Its never really been too good since I've been bent over the hood of a car most of my adult life, but it got to where I couldnt even get out of bed for a while there.. If I sat down for more than 10min it would take me 30min to get back to walking normal..

Anyhow, I went to the doctor.. He sent me to a physical therapist because the x-rays didnt show anything(it must be a pulled muscle right?)... Well, after 2weeks of that with no releif(BTW she had me taking Aleive by the handful for the pain and anti inflamitory effect) I went back to the doctor.. Another check up later(read cha-ching$$$) he sent me to an orthopedic/bone specialist.. He wanted to do an MRI but the insurance wouldnt go for it without another week of therapy, so he tried to send me back to the therapist wondering why I went to him in the first place(you'd think my doctor would know what the insurance required)..

So, after being given the run arround by the Pro's, I looked into Vax-D, vertibral axial decompression... Really cool type of traction, but expencive.. I then found another Chiropractor that made me feel like I could trust him, he told me that he felt confident that he could help me with Cox distraction(I think thats right).. Anyhow, I got my mobility back and have been recovering ever since, as a matter of fact I havent been back to him for a year now.. I'm able to strech and excercise as he taught me and I'm very satisfied with the experience..

Throughout the ordeal I learned alot about the spine, its really ironic when you see the nerves(wire diagram) and how it can effect everything.. Your bowels are just a part of it, if you go to a doctor that has a clue, he will ask you about your bowel movements durring the examination..

So, in summery, get a second opinion..... And ice is best, 20min on 20min off.. Good luck, anyone who hasnt had to deal with back pain has no idea how bad it can be...

About thirty years ago I was in a bad car accident. Flew threw the front windshield of a car. In my left leg I snapped off both the tibia and femur. My leg just dangled there and two bones were sticking through the skin. I did bust up my back pretty bad and was in the hospital for 33 days and alls I could do was lay on my back and stair at the ceiling. That was tough. I wore a corset like thing for three years. Today it is not too bad, I can lift ok as long as it is not too heavy but if I stay in one spot for too long I really start to hurt. Laying is one of them but I can move around and sleep on my side. But I do a lot of wrestling at night. I can not stand at a counter and work at a bench or body will literaly lock up and I can't breath. (don't have to do dishes any more because of it). But as I age it gets worse and worse so I am sure I will going back to the doctor someday for some help.

Al...... have them do a complete body CAT scan and make sure that the pain isn't some other problem. The fall might have been the wake up call from your body for some other malady that is going on. Not wanting to scare you, but back pain is one of the early symptoms of cancers. I have no idea why they manifest themselves this way, but many people that are later diagnosed with cancer remember having back pain a year or two before that went undiagnosed. The CAT scan is painless, unless you are paying for it, and it can give you a lot of peace of mind overall when it is complete. The one question that I always ask a doctor that tells me that there is nothing wrong, is ..... "Would you tell me this if I was a family relative, or would you send me for a second opinion with a specialist?" Invariably, they will send for for a follow up exam by the specialist..... Junk...
