Advice from a Respiratory Therapist about COVID.

Just in case you get the virus and develop symptoms, here’s some good advice from a respiratory therapist to help stay out of the hospital and recover quickly.

CORONA Common Sense

Since they are calling on Respiratory therapist to help fight the Corona virus, and I am a retired one, too old to work in a hospital setting. I'm gonna share some common sense wisdom with those that have the virus and trying to stay home. If my advice is followed as given you will improve your chances of not ending up in the hospital on a ventilator. This applies to the otherwise generally healthy population, so use discretion.

1. Only high temperatures kill a virus, so let your fever run high. Tylenol, Advil. Motrin, Ibuprofen etc. will bring your fever down allowing the virus to live longer. They are saying that ibuprophen, advil etc will actually exacerbate the virus. Use common sense and don't let fever go over 103 or 104 if you got the guts. If it gets higher than that take your tylenol, not ibuprophen or advil to keep it regulated. It helps to keep house warm and cover up with blankets so body does not have to work so hard to generate the heat. It usually takes about 3 days of this to break the fever.

2. The body is going to dehydrate with the elevated temperature so you must rehydrate yourself regulaly, whether you like it or not. Gatorade with real sugar, or pedialyte with real sugar for kids, works well. Why the sugar? Sugar will give your body back the energy it is using up to create the fever. The electrolytes and fluid you are losing will also be replenished by the Gatorade. If you don't do this and end up in the hospital they will start an IV and give you D5W (sugar water) and Normal Saline to replenish electrolytes. Gatorade is much cheaper, pain free, and comes in an assortment of flavors

3. You must keep your lungs moist. Best done by taking long steamy showers on a regular basis, if your wheezing or congested use a real minty toothpaste and brush your teeth while taking the steamy shower and deep breath through your mouth. This will provide some bronchial dialation and help loosen the phlegm. Force your self to cough into a wet wash cloth pressed firmly over your mouth and nose, which will cause greater pressure in your lungs forcing them to expand more and break loose more of the congestion.

4. Eat healthy and regularly. Gotta keep your strength up.

5. Once the fever breaks, start moving around to get the body back in shape and blood circulating.

6. Deep breath on a regular basis, even when it hurts. If you don't it becomes easy to develope pneumonia. Pursed lip breathing really helps. That's breathing in deep and slow then exhaling through tight lips as if your blowing out a candle, blow until you have completely emptied your lungs and you will be able to breath in an even deeper breath. This helps keep lungs expanded as well as increase your oxygen level.

7. Remember that every medication you take is merely relieving the symptoms, not making you well.

8. If your still dying go to ER.

I've been doing these things for myself and my family for over 40 years and kept them out of the hospital, all are healthy and still living today.
Thank you all for sharing. We gotta help one another. Quarantine is 10 days if you have it.

I would add that studies have been trickling out that show that Vitamin D can reduce your chances of getting Covid by about 43% according to a large study, and if you get Covid then Vitamin D can lower the complications. Most people in North America have Vitamin D deficiency in the winter months. One of the problems with Vitamin D is that it takes time to build up in your system so it does no good to start taking it after you get Covid. Best to take a tablet/capsule every day for Covid prevention/reduction.

Selenium and Zinc are both now known to reduce complications with Covid.

I am not a believer if taking all sorts of vitamins/minerals but everyone in our household does take the above 3 supplements.

Melatonin is now being used to fight Covid and showing very good results.

I do not take Melatonin simply because I take a prescription drug that is known to have interactions with Melatonin but the others in my household are taking Melatonin.

The 4 items above guarantee nothing but all 4 are now being used to combat this disease. All 4 are cheap and easily available at health food stores, any large pharmacy or Amazon. Cheap insurance.

Thanks for all that. I didn't know any of the above.
I give Gatorade regularly to my lawn care guys. Now I see why it has gone up in price so much.

Bring on the salmon and the tuna

I tried some melatonin to help me fall asleep. It made me dizzy, but I may have to give it another shot.
Thanks for the info

You can get Vitamin D from sunlight but it needs to hit your skin... which explains why so many at Vitamin D deficient in the winter months. It is difficult to get enough from food sources.

Selenium also comes from food sources and is absorbed by plants from the soil

I take a daily vitamin for 50+ women which contains D3, Zinc, and Selenium. Sometimes I forget to take it, but I put it out on the counter after reading this. I'm taking that sucker every day.

Doc, that initial post on advice from a respiratory therapist is mighty good info. The members on NCT might appreciate that too.

Make sure you get enough of each, most multivitamins give only trace amounts of various vitamins and minerals.

And don’t take my word for any of this, there are actual studies. I could post dozens more links on each of these 3 v& also Melatonin. Below are just some WebMD and Science Daily links but there are current serious medical studies now that are showing these as legitimate treatments and preventatives.

I have a friend who is a retired orthopedic surgeon. She really pushes Vitamin D for those and other reasons. She is going to be on KFAB AM 1110 radio this afternoon to talk about this and Covid related things. It's the Chris Baker Show. Dr. Lee Merritt has been on there every Wednesday for about the past 6 weeks. Y'all can find KFAB on iheart radio if you're interested.

The beauty of Vitamin D is it is cheap and readily available.

The downside is it takes 10-14 days to build up in your system so you need to be proactive on taking it, and then keep taking it until this while Covid mess is over.

Selenium, Zinc and Melatonin are also good supplements and are being used for Covid, apparently effectively. Again, all are cheap. Selenium is the hardest of the 3 to find, but most LARGE pharmacies have it, ditto health food stores.

As with every supplement make sure you do your homework, make sure they don't interact adversely with any drug you are already prescribed. My doctors use a web based thing called "MyChart" and they put all my prescribed meds on the drug page, it allows users to add vitamins/suppliments so I have added these to the list and discussed these with my doctors.

And if you are really bored and want to prevent rather than try to recover from getting sick, here is a somewhat more generic version of supplements, food, health, etc and preventing illness.

I would like to hear what she has to say. I looked at the schedule. It said 2-6 pm. I wish they would narrow down her portion some. I'll try to catch at least some of it.
Thanks for the info

I live in East Tx, so I try to watch Dr. Ed Dominguez every other Friday. He's an infectious disease doctor in some big hospital in Dallas. It's a live segment where he answers email questions and call-in questions about covid. He's a very down-to-earth type person and uses language that regular people can understand. You can get it on the app for KTRE or KLTV.

I listened to the whole thing. Did you?

Here's my take:
She talked way over my head at times, but she seems to really know her stuff and is one smart cookie.
She's not much on these new vaccines and feels like they haven't been through enough rigorous testing, especially the moderna vaccine.
She's against mandatory testing.
She pointed out something about the vaccine and a female's placenta, which could make her sterile in the future. I'd never heard anything about that.

I listened to about 90% of it. What you said is right. Yes, she is very smart and does do a lot of research. I hope she is wrong about the sterilization because that is serious.

She is a Libertarian. They rightfully want government to stay out of our lives, so nothing should be mandatory, so forcing testing is not right and against the constitution.

Lee did run for governor of Iowa about ten years ago on the Libertarian ticket. I helped her set up speeches.
