Buying a new old boat,,,; Yeah it's a sickness

Years agon, 1982 My wife and I bought a boat we could not afford but it was exactly what I wanted. 1982 Tanzer 27 with a Volvo Penta sail drive.

Lots of teak and mahogany with a full teak and holly sole V-berth forward, 1 1/2 berth portside aft , settee stove and sink. Built in Canada on a Paceship 26 mold design it was awesome, stiff and for a shoal draft drop keel, quite seaworthy. During our failed merger with a printing company we lost the boat for non payment of harbor fees. We were bankrupted by our business partners.

Sitting on the hard with no one caring, she deteriorated with water inside ruining the brightwork and rusting the auxiliary.

Since then we restarted the business and recovered most all losses but for that loved boat. Unable to find one worth buying, we ended up with a 30 foot Bahama Islander. The wife loved it's interior, teak and mahogany stem to stern to the point of damn near illegal. In the water already, where we wanted to be it had AC shower, full toilet and a pedigree. We overpaid but it was ready to sail. No decommission, no ship in and recommission, about $6 to $8k* saved so all in all not a terrible deal and it was what SHE who must be obeyed, wanted.

And SHE thought it was what I wanted.

At the dock, it was a fine place to sleep in cool comfort and lots of cabin space to relax.. On the waves, compared to our old Tanzer, it was disappointing. And difficult to single handle.

For several years I have been searching for another Tanzer 27. And today,,,; I found it.
1984 Tanzer 27 located in New Jersey for sale

It's in New Jersey, NYC area and has been upgraded with roller reefed Genoa foresail, Bimini, Spinnaker gear, Beneteau interior and an extra auxiliary motor It is in the water in fine shape ( Bristol) and priced very well. The seller has had it on market for 7 years. And eager to sell.

I had seen this one before but it did not list a diesel auxiliary, a prime component for me. In their latest Ad, they included the Yanmar diesel.

I think we will make a commitment tomorrow. If so the current Bahama boat is for sale. We will take a huge loss but I no longer care. I have sailed a good many craft over time. None ever pleased my sea legs like this model. And the wife can, and has, sailed it alone if she wants.

De-commission is easy, actually one person can do it. The Mast is stepped in a doghouse tabernacle and can be lowered with the mainsheet or the main halyard. With a yard hoist to place it on my hauling trailer, I'll build a wood shipping cradle right under it. And haul it home with the one ton Dodge.

Good luck Franc.
I hope it is as advertised for you.
Last Feb I tried to get the exact model of a boat that I loved. Pics looked great. Got all the way to the KY area near Patti's Settlement (7 hr drive). The boat was something I would never consider. I came home empty handed. May you have 1000 times better luck than I did.

Thanks, I am a bit worried because this one has been for sale for a while.

But it appears to have been cared for. And as they held it for sale, the owners did make additions and improvements.

This particular model has not gotten honest press. Because it was built on the Paceship 26 which was an economy boat builder with a mid level reputation, the Tanzer 27 was not rated well. Yet being built in Nova Scotia with a Beneteau interior and fittings of equal quality, it was much more seaworthy. Still it is referred to as a weekender, entry level boat.
My son and his best buddy lived on ours for almost a year enjoying a great spring/summer/fall on the lake whilst he worked for Ralston in mid state Illinois. Quite a comfy liveaboard for a week ender and at $32K sale price, ( in 1982) not a starter boat either.

At $8K my Windrose 24 was the starter boat I had purchased just two years earlier.

The Tanzer 27 was produced for only three years before the parent company went under. I think they built about 55 boats. All woven fiberglass ( 1.0") thick hulls, hand laid and outfitted.

Nice little boat. I was a member of the sailing club in college quite a few decades ago.

My roommate's dad was a dealer for Islander and I think for Cape Dory.

The Freedom Cat Ketch design always attracted me. Interesting concept, very different/ They had a 33 footer that I was in love with at one point in my life. I'd probably buy a Freedom 44 in a heartbeat if I had a few too many drinks and a moment of weakness.

Those are all well found boats. Clear decks and the ketch versions are fast. Freedom44 needs big water. Lake Michigan big water if not the sea. If I could have the water,,,;53 foot C&C for me. I chartered them back in the 1990's for island hoping in the Caribbean

Dream Shattered.

You are not going to believe this. I called the marina that has the boat for sale at $6.500. About the average price for this craft so I wasn't even going to dicker or offer less.

First the agent at the marina said the boat was $18,000. I said "WHAT?" She goes, "sorry wrong spec sheet. ,,,,uh..; it's $12,000." I go "it is listed at $6,500." "Yes," she replied, "but you have to sign a contract for a year at the marina. That totals $12,000."

Swallowing hard I told her that was unacceptable. "I live in St Louis MO. that's why I want to buy is and move it." "WHY WOULD I WANT IT IN A HARBOR AT NEW YORK CITY?"

"Young lady, the listing is for $6,500. I'll pay that and expect about $1,000 more for decommissioning, hoist and yard fees." I'll not pay $5,500 more to berth it there!" "Last year you put it up for $6,500 and included the slip for the balance of the year."

I didn't need the slip. I have a slip. Apparently, this year they want more?

She then repeated. "The contract is for $6,500 to own the boat and you must sign the contract for the year...; $12,000"

My answer,,," you guys really do things differently in New Jersey. So, we're done here. Bye"

Here is the original Advertisement. Where does it say I have to rent the slip under contract for a year?

Where does it say it's a package for$12K?

I submitted a real offer this morning to the management of the marina declaring that $5,500 for 2 and 1/2 months of slip use was unreasonable.
I offered asking with a time limit of October 15th when the slip rental would be null in any case.
$5500 for two months slip rent? It doesn't match their $7.32 per foot per month published rates.

I am of the suspicion that whomever I talked to, is perhaps confused. We shall see.

I would say so, I am in a 50' covered slip with electricity for $360.00 a month.

So ,this one didn't happen. But, I still have two footitis. You have heard of this. Every Boat owner gets it sometime or other. No matter how big the boat, the Skipper always wants one bigger.

Well, I want one smaller. The 27 foot Tanzer was my favorite boat. I cannot find one to replace the 30 foot Bahama Islander we now have.

I am looking at O'day 27-foot boats but the one that has me interested is the 272. Built on the same hull as the Tanzer, it is lighter and has less Teak and Holly, but it comes with the famed winged keel system. Both were built by Bangor Punta and have the same quality of build. Both have the Tabernacle mast stepping. However, the 272 is trailer able.

Interior floorplan layout is virtually the same as the Tanzer. Just not as much Teak and Holly bright work. Most of the equipment, fixtures, etc is exactly the same as the Tanzer

See the source image

Unlike the Tanzer, there are a lot of them for sale. $6K to $14K.

The Bahama 30 is all Teak in the interior and has all the goodies including AC, Ship to shore radio, Roller furling, and double reef points. Pedestal wheel steering and Heat.

We bought it because it was in the water, and she loved the interior.
Fortunately, Cathy doesn't like to sail the Bahama. It is tender and hard to single handle. The Cockpit is set and rigged like the Tanzer. All lines and halyards lead aft. Easy for singlehanded sailing. She is up for the change. So, the Bahama 30 is for sale.

I want it gone and would accept half what we paid for it, just to get on with acquisition of a 272.
