Homeland Security says do NOT use IE because of major flaws

I assumed that this info would be here, but I haven't seen it. Sorry if this is a duplicate. Anyway, yesterday Homeland Security and most major IT companies sent out announcements to NOT use Internet Explorer; period, until Microsoft is able to fix the "major" flaw and bug that allows 'low level hackers' to take control of your computer. All memos clearly state, if you use Windows XP, you will permanently have to use a different browser because MS will not be coming out with a fix that will help XP.

Good info. I had not seen it before.

The only computer I used IE on was the computer at our Fencing Club, but I recently switched over most of our internet access to FireFox because IE was not compatible with some of our web-editing software.

As a precaution / fix, you can also disable 'Adobe Flash'; especially if you are an XP user.

Because this attack relies on a few of Internet Explorer's extra features, there's a relatively easy fix: Just disable them. FireEye advises disabling the Adobe (ADBE) Flash plugin. While Microsoft works on patching the bug, its engineers suggest running your browser in "Enhanced Protect Mode." But computer experts say that will likely ruin your online experience.

I had heard this is only for IE 6.x. Is that true? Or did I not hear this correctly.
Doesn't matter to me though since I tend to use Firefox and win 7 pro.

The links I have read indicate it is on all versions currently supported by Microsoft, Version 6.0 and later. One could logically interpolate that it also applies to older unsupported versions as well.

No, it the warning is for all Internet Explorer versions from 6.0 and newer. Most people are running newer versions and, by volume of users using newer versions alone, they are most vulnerable.

I like the response in this USA Today's clip that simply says "Use Google Chrome. They dare people to hack it. They say it can't be done". IMHO, that sounds like a simple and easy fix. I personally have used Chrome for years and find it a simple switch and considerably faster.

Microsoft still has no fix for Internet Explorer. Why not just use Google Chrome?

I may regret it but this coming from a gov't agency is hard to take serious 'cause all they give out anymore is lies and BS.

Oh, it's from a heck of a lot more places than just the government. This is the first time I recall the government ever advising the public to not use a computer program; especially one that is still on approximately 55% of all desktops in this country.
