First, I don't take any offense that Bombardier isn't listed on the snowcats homepage here. ahahahahahah! We know you love us. Well, It's been a long time coming. I've dreamt about owning a snowcat ever since i started snowboarding 28 years ago. They just looked so bad ass! Now while my little Bombi may not be a beast it will definitely get me started on the journey to bigger and deeper money pits! = ) Without further ado, I'd like y'all to meet "Gatito Malo" Bad Kitty

She's a 76 Bombardier Bombi 1.6L 4 speed. Picked it up for 9500$ delivered. It's needs a bit of love to be expected. Lots of PO hack job wiring, bit of rust, but it runs. Things I know have been done already are foamed tires, valve stem protectors, electronic ignition (not sure which, yet) roll bar added, as well as some funky hoops up front on the sides, and some LED bars have been added. It's ready for a full teardown but I'm hoping to to deal with the major resto in the spring.

Things that I knew or now know need attention are steering or lack there of, choke cable needs to be shortened, headlights aren't turning on, replace all fluids, grease all zircs, try to get the cab dry and hit it with por 15 after a good scrub. Unfortunately I don't have a shop and it's the middle of rainy season here so this outta be fun.

Tell you what, if you make it to the Alpine Cat Jamboree in Joseph Oregon I will let you drive my Frandee and my Kitten if you let me drive your Gatito Malo (love the name).

@MNoutdoors I'll address the issue over here as not to bog down HillBilt's thread.

You mentioned in his thread that the steel fans are designed to push air through the radiator the during summer and pull air during the winter. Is this correct? any advantages either way? I have a steel one and will only be using this thing for snow adventures. Are the benefits worth the added cost of switching?

Could someone please explain to me the fun of owning one of those? To me having a snowmobile would be a lot more fun and cost less to maintain.

Not crapping on your hobby just trying to understand it. A buddy of mine has a Model T with snow treads and skis on it.

That's like asking why people climb mountains.

It's like motorcycles. Some like like the fast bikes, some like the cruisers with stereo radios.

A cat will carry a ton more gear than a sled. Slower but in a heated cab.

A cat will run on deep powder that sleds get stuck in.

Oh and welcome to the snowcat section, we don't fight as much as some of the other crowds. :)

Welcome to the disease...
Yes...it is a disease for which there is no cure, well sort of, and you found it.
I was bitten by the cat bug at the tender age of 16....I'm 68 now and finally got my first real cat back in Feb of this year..

You are correct "Money Pit"

Money can't buy happiness they say.....hmmmm...you can buy a snow cat....that's pretty close.

Enjoy the cat...

@Rudi Well it goes a little something like this for me anyways.

I like to share the fun. A snowmobile is good for me, a snowcat is good for me and my friends. I'm a social human. I like to interact with others. You see, when me and my woman wanna take our girlfriend out in the woods, its a lot easier when you sit 3. Try that on your snowmobile = )

A bit of damage and this horrendous caulk that was used to seal up the influx of moisture apparently. Interesting engineering going on here. Great tool for the removal job though

Really cool old hydronic heater that had a manual diverter valve to run up to the dash defroster. Still operational. It didn't make the cut. I want maximum floatation so all unnecessary baggage mush go. The other heater will be getting pulled also. I bet these 2 Items way close to 35lb. BYE BYE. Anyone want em? I'll be replacing them with a new heater core and fan set up. Same amount of btu half the space and amp draw.

It's got some cancer but don't be scared. I'll fix it up with a cup brush on a 4.5 Grinder and some POR 15 roll on.

IMG_4148.jpg

As stripped down as I takin it for now. I wanna go drive this thing. The cancer needed to be addressed though while I was messing with the chunk.

My lady hard at work. Love this girl! It's 40f out.

Diff Breather tube. It looks fairly new. Maybe I'll see if I can pop it apart and dry the balls inside.

Anna's crushin that cancer!!!

IMG_4186.JPG

Only gonna strip and paint half way down the into the tub for now. We'll finish this part in the summer on the total tear down. Notice the nice Chafe hole where the winch wires feed?(n) I really liked the way @HillBilt did his winch terminal. I'll do something similar.

Had to make a temporary workshop. Conditions went from cold to worse. Failure is not an option and this thing will hit snow!:ROFLMAO:

Now, onto the diff and fluids. I haven't popped the diff cover yet but any recommendations on diff cover gasket? I'll use this chat for info on diff oil. Catepillar T0-4 30w

Not looking so good.... so far. Quite a bit of rust on the steering bands and this fluid looks like baby shit.

I noticed a bit of grease here. Is there a zirc fitting for this? Right where the bolt glides through that hole.

IMG_4204.JPG

Otherwise, cattin along = ) What do you recommend @MNoutdoors? Do you have a pair relined sittin on the shelf or do I need to rip these out and send them?

Also, who's got the bullet proof seal process for this diff case? The gasket still looks great. any sealant required?

Mnoutdoors has a new rubber gasket for the differential, no sealant required....should last the next 40 + years. When I went through my rebuild list prior to starting on the Bombi, I called Mnoutdoors (Brad) and placed a bulk order: track belts, bearings and races, gaskets, seals, etc. Once I dug into the machine, I ordered as I came across issues.....which was many (clutch, starter, carburetor, grousers, cleats)....was surprised on the plethora of replacement parts....and in depth knowledge.

That differential looks rough.....have you swept the bottom with a magnet? Snowcatt in here has rebuilt 5 of these, hopefully he’ll chime in on the pictures.

Nope haven't swept it yet. Was just about to drain it then I got stuck in a diff oil rabbit hole. From what I can see, no chipped gears. But I need to bust the u joint loose to spin the diff.

Much better plan of attack than I had. :ROFLMAO:

If the tracks are still on the machine, the drive shaft U joint won’t help. If you remove the cap on the sprocket gears, you can pull the floating axle out on each side, put the transmission in neutral....then spin the drive shaft (a big screw driver in the u joint for leverage), good to go.

I didn’t need to pull the bands on my Bombi, but on my SW48 I did. I had the same problem until Boggie clued me on removing the front cross member on the differential.

I thought I had figured it out when I noticed a pic in one of these bombi threads that had that crossmember removed. I was so excited and ran outside to remove it thinking i had won against the almighty steering band, but nope didn't do it either. Theoretically, it should all come out in one piece eh? I'm gonna need a bigger hammer.
