the gal behind the bar seemed to pay no attention to our 'snow cat seeking world renowned Olympic skier', matter of fact, no one noticed that he was not from around there,
she kept the Coors coming...with prefect timing
he been there about an hour, still trying to read the room, more importantly, who owned the Shebly, the couple of guys he chatted with had no idea, everyone in the bar looked to be the pickup truck type, except the strange guy in the corner, everyone seemed to know him, but nothing about him, some say he was from the east coast and living on a trust fund, others thought he was a some kind drop out over educated college professor, everyone agreed that some day, everyone would be reading about him in the news papers, mike was writing his snow cat manifesto...
the gal behind bar had really got to him, he was very sure, she knew him, and for all the love and money in the world, he was sure he should know her, but could not place her and yet, that smile, looked so familiar. By now, it was getting late and there were only a couple folks left in Grumpy's goat bar, and even the goat had fallen asleep on top of the bar.
He was ready to leave and wanted to settle up for the beer and just like the Coors that always seemed to show up at the right moment, there she was, with his check, now, he had met so many girls over the years and never had a problem talking to the opposite sex, this time was different, he knew that smile, just as he tried for the third time to say something, she called him by name and says it has been fun, cuz, she knew he did not recognize her...
after what seemed to an eternity, he said, okay, I know the smile, but i do not remember you.
story teller: bet I know what you guys are saying right now, well you are wrong!
she stops him right there, and tells him, yes, she does know him and they had met, it had been a few years ago, and she was still in high school and his ski racing career had just begun and was dating her sister (former fiancee), and yes, she let him know how stupid her sister had been, by now, his mind was racing with questions, but the first one out of his mouth was, who's Shelby is it, she laughed, it is mine, I won it in a card game with her sisters ex. yup they were not together...
Karma is wonderful, he thought.
now it was late, and he was damn tired, long day and all, and she needed to kick Mike and his manifesto out of the bar, close up and head home, she suggested that he could stay in the up stairs apartment and they could meet up in the morning for a late breakfast, catch up on life. it had been 5 years since she had last seen him
yup, she owned the bar...and mike was her husband
