I saw it and I was thinking about it, but never responded.
Bascially a guy had a tag line and he was told to change it. His original tag line was: "Welcome to American, now speak English" There were a couple follow up posts talking about French Canadians who made sure signs were in French, etc. A post or two about not wanting to be told what to speak. Etc. Overall it made an interesting point. He drove his point home when he changed his tag line. I don't recall the exact wording of the new line. But it is something like: "Independant thought expresses freedom, or so I have been told" Again, my wording is not exact, but he is using his new tag line to point out that there is censorship of thought on the welding forum.

I read the first (oldest) page and then the last page.
Interesting read on how people feel about whether you should learn English to live in the USA. Coming away from it, my thoughts were that if you're going to live/work in "mainstream" USA, learn it... If you want to live/work in "little insert country/language here" enjoy but don't make it whereby I need to learn your language to communicate in the mainstream. |
