Ray, I use OpenOffice-Win instead of Word and find it excellent. Likewise Firefox-Win, it's much better than IE.

But I haven't found free equivalents as good as Photoshop Elements, NewsRover, or TaxCut. They are worth paying for.

Could you put up a similar list but limited to s/w that is free, maintained, and considered excellent?

What's the advantage of Linux for the home user? I'll never need server or multi-user capability.

I bought a Linux book-with-cd years ago and spent a whole week straight trying to make it run. Finally I read in PcMag or somewhere (pre-internet) that the boot module in the latest release was never going to work right; my install was worthless. I haven't been back. Don't need the frustration.

That was a loong time ago. I had a similar experience with OS/2. I set it up and everything worked nice but there were no serial drivers available above 9600 baud so my state of the art $200 14.4k modem ran slower. There never was a fix for that as far as I know.

I know modern stuff is far better than the bleeding-edge early releases but if it's going to take a week to learn and set up for no improvement in the user experience, why bother? Any O/S should simply serve up applications. XP seems to do that ok. What's the Linux advantage?

I loaded and booted Ubuntu at work for some test. didn't really get to use the OS; just nedded to boot it. Loaded very easy; made Win look like a real pain. Also came with a word, power point, and excell like programs.

It looked so windowsish it was scary. I did some solaris stuff some years back; it was fun to fiddle with VI for a couple minutes :thumb: Funny, that old Sparc-20 I was on had all kinds of windowing and gui stuff:tiphat:
