Ignorance of the law............

I just can't get over the ignorance by liberals about the Constitution.

A couple of days ago we had an incident near my apartment complex. A young man, believed to be 16 hung himself behind the dumpsters. It is tragic that someone so young thought life was not worth living. The local news media was on hand and of course all the rescue equipment. Of course no one knows for sure what happened and we all thought it would be in the paper by this time, but it isn't. So I speculated that it wasn't a suicide but possibly murder. This led several idiot liberals to say that the police probably ordered the news media to be silent. I said that they can't do that and here is where the argument ensued.

These idiots think that the first amendment does not apply to news organizations if law enforcement tells them not to publish. I said that the media can publish anything it wants regardless of what police or anyone else tells them. I ended up walking away because of the stupidity of liberals.

Unfrigginbelievable! :soapbox::soapbox::soapbox:

I know the police can request the media not to publish a article pending it could in some way interfere with the ongoing investigation and that could be the case here.

Happens in the UK and i am sure it does also in the US.

There is news and there is ongoing investigation. That which is public, such as kid hanging himself, or even being murdered, is news and is fair game.

The workings of an ongoing investigation would not necessarily be fair game.

I'd speculate that the news media chose not to publish for their own reasons, whatever they may be.

I believe that out of consideration for the family a lot of suicides are more or less kept hush hush or confidential. In reality I really don't have a problem with it myself.

You are probably correct. There is still a touch of stigma and then all those questions that family and friends are asking themselves.

If law enforcement requests that the media not cover a story for a valid reason the media will usually cooperate, unless the story
is of major importance. But they cannot be ordered to suppress a story. Not yet, at least.
