While we are reviewing the Trans Antarctic Expedition (TAE), I felt another thread should be started to capture the International Geophysical Year (IGY) expedition / survey that was occurring at the same time. Their job was a multi national effort to learn as much as possible about Antarctica.
Not coincidentally, their weapon of choice was a Tucker.
