WTS, DIY Hydrostatic cat project!

bombthebest

Member
In Quebec Canada, a DIY hydrostatic drive cat.
It is ready for action!, but has been conceived with a lot of standard features
and made to customize even more!.
It is turbo diesel powered, (VW Golf 75HP). The engine as been completely
disasembled, checked, re-ringed, and painted. It is in perfect order and has
a block heater.
Some of the cool features: a 8500lbs winch is in the front (behind grill) and
can easily be used to pull from the back too with provided pulley system.
Air suspension, with gaz shocks, are adjusted independently from the cab.
An air compressor with 4 air bags, and air pressure gauges are present.
The total width of the tracks is variable via a ram, controlled from inside the cab too. In "narrow" mode tracks overall is 72inches and in "wide" mode, 84
inches. Those 2 features to permit entry in a trailer/ home garage/ narrow
pass in a trail.
Some pictures show the difference between track width, (the un-painted pictures).
Plenty of lights up front, even a search light is present.
Of course, a Kenwood radio/cd with speakers, adjustable seats, heater,
parallel wipers are there.
Tracks are from a Bombi and grousers are aluminum. They are 28 inches wide but will need new belts in a couple of years.

Being hydrostatic, it is extremely maneuvrable and can turn in it's own length. Fuel tank has a 50 liters capacity.
Driving is via 2 "F N R" levers, on your left hand. Control from the FNR levers
are transmitted via cables to the pumps but i had electronic FNR in mind
and will tell you how to do it if need be.

There are a few things to perfect on the cat but as i said, it's ready for action!. It has been built with almost everything new on it, except tracks, engine, and tires.
Front and rearmost tires are eurethane filled and buyer should do the same with remaining 4 tires.
Hydrostatics and hydraulics are all new with about 100 hours on them.
I had all hydraulic hoses custom made with pressure over-rating so they
won't burst and last for a looooong time.
Sprockets are custom made and are new as well.
Instrumentation: a RPM/hour meter, 4 air suspension pressure gauges,
engine coolant and hydrostatic oil temps, turbo boost and fuel level gauges.
Observed top speed, on a gps: 10mph, on hard pack or deep powder, powder does not slow it down much!.
I drove this on flat land, here it's flat land only :( so i did not install parking brakes. It was in mind tho and i will explain how to do it (it was intended to be spring applied/air released disc brakes on the front tires. The hubs are already machined to fit discs.

I designed and built this cat myself, being a cat maintenance mechanic and
operator ( BR-180, 275, 350 ).
It took the better part of four years to built and countless hours to design.

It is not intended for hard work or mud rides, it is a fun winter rides cat!.
Buyer should be good with mechanics, and electrics as there are no shop
manuals for this! this is a one of a kind!. Sadly, the cab was designed for
a short 5' 6" myself so no tall guy is going to fit :) .

IMPORTANT:
The cat is not registered yet. It will have to be, as a DIY off road vehicule
so make sure you can cross the border with this in tow, if needed, as i can-not deliver myself.

It makes me sad to have to sell this but for a lack of space, places to ride and health reasons, i have to sell :( .
Never counted how much it cost me to build (i'm actually scared of counting it), but i am asking a bargain price of $6000.00 CAN for it.

Post any questions here if need be.
Loading pictures does not seem to work now, i will as soon as possible!...

he has done a nice job on it looks like it's just what you need Bob you can narrow it down to get through your gates

Additional info: this has been put together with name brands Sauer Sunstrand
pumps and White georollers wheel motors.
The front bumper assembly with winch is bolted on and can be removed in minutes. Same for the "power unit". All the engine, pumps, traction motors,
can be removed without even dismantling a hydrostatic hose so no contamination of fluid occurs.
Cab is made of 3/4 inch plywood covered with aluminum. It is bolted on
frame and easy to remove. Track adjusters are at the rear!, via a bolt/nut
adjuster. Very solid construction. Brackets are there if a front blade is needed. The custom joystick has a 12 function capability.

Nice work bombthebest!! Probably one of those projects where you will not get all your money and time back out by selling it. But who ever gets it will sure be getting a nice machine.

Thanks guys . I never weighted it . It's a pretty strong frame cause
i needed that for suspensions and especially the telescopic tracks feature.

6000lbs??
Never put it on a scale but i had weighted a lot of components; engine,
pumps, empty fuel and hydraulic tanks etc and i came with an estimated 4500lbs (without tracks) but they are aluminum.
It is not a featherweight cat but one thing i can say (admit), is that i
climbed several sand "hills" covered with hard packed snow and i
was so inclined that engine oil was coming out of the dipstick!, it was more
then a 100% grade... It has awesome traction.

Isn't 100% grade straight up?

Great looking cat, btw.

No -- grade is calculated by the rise over the run. 100% grade is a 1' up for every 1' over, or a 45 degree slope. Straight up would be an infinite grade.

any videos of it in action?
No sadly . I keept the build "secret" to most of my friends as with the tests and first rides. They kept asking me "what are you up to in your garage all the time", i was saying ;working on "mon projet X" in french= X project.
This is why i named it "projet X "...

I like the idea of the tracks narrowing for transport. good idea. I could use that on my canyon.

Well, being 5'6" i have plenty of head clearance, it's just that a 5'10" guy
will bang his head sometimes :yum:. The seats are fully adjustable car seats,
but it sits directly on the floor of the machine, on it's tracks (front to back adjuster). It could be made lower but will compromise leg comfort.
I had to make a compact cab cause number one priority was lo be able
to enter a house garage and closed trailer. When deflated, the air suspension
lets the bottom of the cab almost touch the grousers, it is very compact
when in narrow/ deflated suspension mode.

Forgive me if you included it already..

But do you have a ballpark figure in mind?

That might help generate a bit more interest. I think it's a great looking cat. I also think that selling custom stuff HURTS! Nobody ever seems to get their money back on cars or anything else that's a labor of love.

Just wondering from the cheap seats. It's a fabulous machine. Something for all of us tinkerers to strive towards.

JP, you mean the price?

yes. Did you mention it and I just missed it?

it's quite a machine.. and I bet it's worth a ton if you could pay yourself back for labor. That's why things are made in factories... economy of scale.

JP
Yeah, sorry, it is mentioned near the bottom of the first text. I have 90% of
all the bills of things i purchased to build this but i'm scared of counting the total:unsure:. It probably drained me of 15 to 20K .
I did not have to pay for any machining and welding tho (except fuel and hydraulic tanks), cause i have a band saw, milling machine and lathe.

If you guys look at the front pictures, you will see a "hole" in the front plate on the right
under the winch, with a red "thingy". This red thing is a long pull rod that
goes all the way to the back (a red plate). Unbolt the plate and hook-up the
winch cable on the hook, up front, disengage winch and pull cable thru frame
member. I made a special 2 pulley setup for the front and a mini "quad roller"
at rear cable exit. All of this fitted in maybe 5 mins. At the back, there is a
machined oval hole in the frame plate, i is an access hole for a 3 way winch
switch, so you can control winch if by yourself, from the back of the cat.

If you ever have to pull the cat with another machine:whistling:, there are 2 ball
valves on the hydrostatic motor lines that you simply have to flip and, no
hydraulic restriction, you are freeweeling:biggrin:. The traction motors won't be damaged as they will freespin in oil all the time. (There are no planetaries on
the sprocket drives) so no mechanical ways of disengaging the motors,
yep, thought of everything!.
