Cat Refuses To Leave Maple Tree Home

A cat born in a maple tree in the US seven months ago has reportedly never left its tree home and has "no desire" to come down from it.

Retired carpenter, Ron Venden, 66, has been caring for the cat, which he named Almond, since he spotted it with its family in the tree near Belleville, Wisconsin, last June.

While the mother cat and other kittens have left the tree, Mr Venden said Almond had stuck around ever since.

He told the local newspaper State Journal that he had never seen any paw prints in the snow around the tree.

Relatives of Mr Venden also confirmed that they had not seen the cat anywhere other than the tree.

Mr Venden said he'd tried bringing the cat down several times but the cat had resisted and scratched him.

The neighbour believes the cat has stayed while its siblings have left before Mr Venden is "treating it too good".

Venden climbs about 3.5m up the tree at least twice a day to check on and feed the cat.

He has made a straw bed for Almond to sleep on in a hollowed out section of the tree, and provided bowls of salami, meatloaf and milk, as well as dry cat food.

Mr Venden said he enjoyed caring for Almond even though his neighbours think it is "goofy."

I hate to say it but the best thing for that cat would be to mitt up and knock him out of that tree. He will need to learn to walk on level ground and drink water or he will suffer a nasty death sooner or later. heck he is only 10-12 ft. off the ground. My cats jump farther than that in the barn all the time.

The first thing I wondered.... don't cats have some natural "sandbox" instinct ?
Should one be careful walking under the tree or what ???

Bet the cat comes down at night or when nobody is around and takes a kitty poo.

Yes, there can be no question that he comes down, as he must at times. And, during the night would be my bet too...

Lovely story pg. I'm deathly afraid of Cas, but I concede that they are beautiful creatures, and this one is a very good specimen of the species. He looks extraordinarily healthy also.

Alas, it is all too true. I am a wussy. :( However, I am getting better, and am able to scare the farm cats away from the Pheasants and Partridge at feeding time now. I send my Toy Poodle out. :halo:

Seriously, I can now have them fairly close to me (about 5-7 feet away), without freezing up.
