After the outrage, Dem 2020 candidates silent about Smollett hoax

The social and cultural fallout from the revelation that Jussie Smollett staged a "hate crime" attack with the help of two friends is just now being assessed, as advocates and activists who blamed Trump, white supremacy, and homophobia for Smollett's "ordeal" find themselves in the unenviable position of having to support the actor who continues to lie about the incident or somehow make amends for their stupidity and bigotry.

But politicians who went out on a limb in supporting Smollett and castigating Trump supporters have a different problem. They must deal with the reality that they were wrong - dead wrong. And as we all know, politicians simply can't be seen as being "wrong" about anything." This is especially true when it comes to the issue of race and, to a lesser extent, sexual preference. There is only one "right way" to see these issues and that is blame whites for hating minorities and straight males for hating gays. Perish the thought that a black, gay actor would try to hoax them.

But it happened, and candidates who came out strongly supporting Jussie Smollett without any evidence and numerous questions about the incident have to say something.

As of now, they are silent.

In particular, three Democratic presidential candidates made especially strong statements on the fake attack.

Cory Booker
@CoryBooker
The vicious attack on actor Jussie Smollett was an attempted modern-day lynching. I'm glad he's safe.

To those in Congress who don't feel the urgency to pass our Anti-Lynching bill designating lynching as a federal hate crime– I urge you to pay attention.

Kamala Harris

@JussieSmollett
is one of the kindest, most gentle human beings I know. I’m praying for his quick recovery.

This was an attempted modern day lynching. No one should have to fear for their life because of their sexuality or color of their skin. We must confront this hate.

This is a sickening and outrageous attack, and horribly, it's the latest of too many hate crimes against LGBTQ people and people of color. We are all responsible for condemning this behavior and every person who enables or normalizes it. Praying for Jussie and his family.

#Empire star Jussie Smollett was hospitalized after a possible hate crime. Attackers "poured an unknown chemical substance" on him and “wrapped a rope around [his] neck.” (link: https://twitter.com/i/moments/1090300314853371904) twitter.com/i/moments/1090…

Washington Examiner:

Democratic presidential candidates jockeying for position in 2020 had a lot to say when actor Jussie Smollett said he was attacked in Chicago by two white men who shouted racist and homophobic slurs as they beat him.

But they were silent on Saturday, when law enforcement sources said that Chicago Police believed "Empire" star Smollett, 36, who is gay, paid two black men to set up the assault. Police arrested the men, who are brothers from Nigeria, on Wednesday but released them Friday after discovering "new evidence."

A Chicago police spokesman said: "We can confirm that the information received from the individuals questioned by police earlier in the Empire case has in fact shifted the trajectory of the investigation." He added that police wanted to speak to Smollett again.

Incredibly, some journalists are excusing these responses as "acceptable" - despite the titanic smear against their political opponents that was based on zero evidence.

Twitchy:

A lot of tweets from politicians and celebrities wishing to get in on the story haven’t aged well, and Caleb Hull passed around a few screenshots from Nancy Pelosi, Kamala Harris, and Cory Booker, who called the alleged attack “a modern-day lynching.”

Broadcast journalist Shawn Reynolds, though, has volunteered to play defense for the Democrats, arguing that everything they said was a completely acceptable response at the time.

Given the information at the time, these are completely acceptable responses. If these were posted in the last 5 minutes, it would be entirely different. https://t.co/DChdlRQfo7

Not surprisingly, Reynolds has since deleted that tweet. But the responses are telling:

This might just be the worst take I've seen on the Jussie Smollett case.

Justifying celebrities, journalists, and politicians spreading total misinformation to smear Trump because the media ran with a fake story is not making the point you think it's making. (link: https://twitter.com/ShawnReynolds_/status/1096943714709123072) twitter.com/ShawnReynolds_…

They wanted this to be true so badly because it would confirm the veracity of the narrative. Just like the Covington Boys, and Justice Kavanaugh, The narrative is more important than truth!

Not true at all. The “information” given at the time was literally only from him. Taking accusations seriously is something everyone should do. But reporting on them without concrete evidence and telling everyone it it definitely happened when there’s no proof is wrong.

As soon as he refused to turn over his phone and left the rope around his neck until cops arrived the lie was exposed. Desperation to see the country through your twisted perspective made it seem logical to you.

Come on dude.

Two MAGA hat wearing rednecks walking around freezing Chicago at 2am with bleach and a noose beat him up and yelled “THIS IS MAGA COUNTRY!”

That was the fakest story I’ve ever heard and anyone with any sense knew it was fake.

A presidential candidate cannot use that defense. It would be tantamount to admitting that you react without thinking - which, to be sure, they did.

It's not likely that any of these candidates, or any other politician, will be hurt by their initial reaction to the Smollett incident. They will either maintain silence or use the standard "both sides are wrong" argument. It's sickening to contemplate, but the outrageous pandering to minorities represented by this incident - where reason and logic take a back seat to raw emotionalism - demonstrates an unfitness for high office.

How the Smollett hate crime case unraveled
By Thomas Lifson

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2019/02/how_the_smollett_hate_crime_case_unraveled.html

The ongoing collapse of the claimed hate crime against actor Jussie Smollett has been an example of bottom-up, not top-down news gathering. Chicago’s Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and the CPD’s official communications have at every opportunity defended the original narrative. But the rank-and-file cops, quite probably outraged at what was fairly quickly seen by them as an obvious fraud, leaked to their friends in the local media. And two outstanding local websites, Second City Cop and especially CWB Chicago (which reports honestly about crime in the Windy City, and which depends on donations – donate here), have been to go-to sources putting it all together many steps ahead of what the more established media were willing to publish.

CWB Chicago has a round-up of the latest developments in the fast-breaking case. Some excerpts, but be sure to read the whole thing:

Saturday evening, CPD’s top spokesperson said investigators’ interrogations of Abimbola "Abel" Osundairo and his brother Olabinjo "Ola" Osundairo have “shifted the trajectory of the investigation. We've reached out to [Smollett’s] attorney to request a follow-up interview." The two men were identified as being the "persons of interest" seen on surveillance images near the attack scene. (snip)

CBSChicago reporter Charlie De Mar reported that the Osundairo brothers were paid $3,500 to participate in the ruse with a promise to be paid another $500 upon their return from a two-week trip to Nigeria that began hours after Smollett reported the purported hate crime to police.

De Mar also reported that the Osundairo brothers told detectives that they and Smollett “rehearsed the attack days prior to it happening.”

Rafer Weigel of Fox Chicago also reported that detectives said the Osundairos were paid by Smollett to orchestrate the attack. Weigel, CNN, and Rob Elgas of ABC7 all reported that detectives had secured proof that the Osundairo brothers purchased a rope for the noose at an Ace Hardware store. That information was also included in a detailed tip about the case that CWBChicago received on Feb. 6th. (snip)

And, in a potential sign of things to come, Fox News reporter Mike Tobin reported late Saturday that “Jussie Smollett is no longer considered a victim in this case.”

One of the most intriguing, but as-yet unconfirmed, aspects of the case is raised by CWBChicago’s publication on Thursday of the search warrant used to enter the apartment of the Osundairo Brothers. In an example of the building on each other’s work of these two blogs, Second City Cop explains today:

Numerous readers sent us the Search Warrant receipt that had been circulating around Twitter, Facebook and (again) the CWB blog that has done incredible amounts of reporting. (snip)

Source: CWBChicago

…right on Line One is what interests us....or rather, what might finally bring the whole mess to the FBI:

  • Magazine on bird cage

The warrant already lists Proof of Residency farther down the receipt. Why seize a magazine? Is this the magazine that might have all the letters cut out of it for the mail threat that was sent from a south side post office to the studio about a month ago? It's hard to believe that someone would keep that around afterwards, but everyone knows the feds take a very dim view of using the Post Office for anything illegal.

If this theory pans out, on top of state charges, the feds will have to get involved. If, as many suspect, the Osundairo Brothers have turned state’s evidence (why else would they have been released by the cops so quickly after their arrest?), Jussie Smollett’s troubles have only just begun.

I hope the pols and media types don't own guns. If they did they'd be more apt to pull the trigger as fast as they jump to conclusions which could be extremely dangerous.
