If only I lived closer :whistling:

CAMDEN – The Battleship New Jersey has launched an auction for the right to fire the ship’s 5-inch gun at the end of the fireworks display over the Delaware River on July 3rd.

“A lucky guest will literally pull the trigger and fire the 5-inch gun to end this year’s fireworks show,” said CEO Jim Schuck. “This is the same gun that was used effectively throughout the history of the USS New Jersey – from World War II to the Persian Gulf War – hitting targets up to 10 miles away. But not to fear, we are only shooting blanks! But they are loud and make a great flash!”

Have you ever seen the breech block on those babies? That is a massive hunk of steel to lock down. Not to mention how many powder bags it holds. Big bang for sure.

By the way, The 5" uses a brass powder case. The 16" are the ones that use the powder bags. Just a point of info.

Jerry, if the 5" guns have a 10 mile range, how far can the 16" guns shoot?

I thought I read when one of the ships was in the Middle East in the 80's, that the 16" guns had ~25 mile range.

When in doubt, got to the source...

http://www.ussmissouri.com/visitor-information/interesting-facts

They indicate accuracy to 23 miles. "The nine 16-inch guns are the Mighty Mo’s trademark feature. Each gun barrel is to approximately 67 feet long, weighs an incredible 116 tons, and can fire a 2,700-pound shell 23 miles in 50 seconds — with pinpoint accuracy."

Got to witness the New Jersey firing a six gun broadside from her 16" guns off the coast of 'Nam back in '70. BIG boom, bright flash, lots of smoke; and got to watch the shells fly by. Yes, those things are so big you can see them flying through the air with the naked eye. What was really impressive, however, was watching what happened to the ship right after firing.

You've gotta understand, those battle wagons are HUGE! A full six gun broadside rocked her over about 10 degrees, and slide her sideways over 100 feet! It was like watching someone negligently push the U.S. Capitol Building out of the way. Awesome.

I saw the New Jersey just prior to it's recommissioning in March of 1968 just before we shipped out to the Med. She was magnificent and beautiful ship but not quite as big as the Independence.

Shooting off one of the big guns is no big deal, the VC let Jane Fonda do it for free.

Neat picture. Not the Big J but two of her sister ships.
