WTF is a Juneteenth celebration celebrating? I've never heard of this until I read about the violence thing.

Well, basically, it's a celebration of the day, June 19, 1865, when some General read a proclamation, the Emancipation Proclamation I presume, in Galveston, TX that the slaves had been freed.
So, naturally, what better way to celebrate than beating some guy to death.
