pinched nerve in neck

Dang that hurts...

Don't know what I did but I pinched a nerve in my neck.

Couldn't move my head/neck in any direction for a couple days so I went to a Chiropractor.

He did some movement measurements, took some X-rays, electro-shock treatment, ultrasound treatment, massage and some adjustments (cracking). That helped restore movement of my head/neck but my right shoulder has got seriously sharp pain and the rest of my right arm is still numb. Visited my PCP who prescribed Percoset, valium and steroids which is taking the edge off but still the right arm is shot.

Next step is probably a MRI and probably a shot of something directly into my spine (Cortizone?). Not looking forward to that one.

What's a real bugger is that my current work engagement is supposed to end at the end of this year but I haven't been able to work for the past week and probably next week as well. This post is about as much as I can type in a day.

Laying down with my arm behind my head is about the only way I can stay relatively pain free. Mrs. Zoom and the kids aren't getting their presents wrapped, unless they wrap them themselves.

Won't be on the forum much until I can get my arm working so I can drive the mouse (and type with my right hand).

I went through that several years back - took 9 days for the spasm to stop and several weeks to rehab the shoulder & get full sensation back in 3 fingers. (Ulnar nerve inpingement secondary to the spasm) so you have my full sympathy. since opioids don't work well on me, I has to treat mine with NSAIDS like naproxen & Relafen. Good luck!

You have my sympathy. I've been there all year with neck & back pain. If fact I had an MRI and CAT scan this past Friday. Just waiting on the results now. When I did in my neck it took about two weeks and a couple of shots for it to settle down enough to where I could function ... still hurts. It's strange, you never realize how often you nod and turn your head in a day until your neck hurts and then it's a case of finding a comfortable position and trying to maintain it.

Good luck and I hope it clears up soon.

Just saw this thread!
NSAIDS (Aleve- for me) is the only thing that has worked on the pain when I get a pinched nerve (happens a few times a year ugh!).
My entire back is basically shot, so I can sympathize with that sort of pain that radiates from any area from neck to lower back.
Just remember it's temporary Brian, and that with rest and the proper treatments, you'll be back in the pink again.
Take care and update us soon.

Brian, hope you are feeling better buddy! Sure sounds like that would be painful. It's one of the few pains I have not experienced myself.
Best wishes and hurry back. :thumb: :D

Having a Bad back /neck myself it is best if you rest with your neck by reclining on a set of these (. .). I personally have never got to do that but it sure sounds like it might work . Get well soon Boomer

Well, I'm still "down for the count".

Living on Percocet, Valium... just so I can move around. Right arm still is in severe pain due to pinched nerve.

Getting the MRI results on Monday but it sounds like Degenerative Joint Disease (osteoarthritis).

I would suggest seeing another Chiropractor. Many years ago I had a neck problem and just before surgery by the squids my OIC talked me into seeing a friend of his who was a chiropractor. In about 15 min I was pain free, er just sore muscles from not turning my neck for weeks. Just a thought, back/neck pain is such a pain, well you know that.

another Chiropractor

I would go to a osteopathic physician.

Your body is all you have. Dinking around wasting time with your health is tantamount to taking your truck to a guy who is "sort of good with engines."

And you risk masking the symtoms of a serious condition.

My wife goes to a new age chiropractor. You know the type, soothing laughing water over rocks, mood music, incense, and unintelligible mumbo jumbo about her qi and her chakra.

If our insurance wasn't paying for this I'd tell her to buy herself a nice dress and go have a spa day.

When she goes I always ask her if this guy is going to let her "keep the chicken."

You know, the one that he swings over her head during the chanting and channel rites of her dead ancestors.

Go see a doctor, one that hasn't 'graduated' from a cadaver school in the Bahamas.

OK, I'm back to about 90-95%. The neck gets a little tight now and then and I occasionally get a tingle in my arm but neither condition requires any meds. I just exercise it a bit more.

and that with rest and the proper treatments, you'll be back in the pink again.
Ummm, isn't that kind of personal? Mrs. Zoom probably wouldn't like me doing a kiss and tell on a forum.

I'm an therapeutic massage specialist! I can try and instruct you on pressure points to help relieve your pinched nerve, however you'd probably be like huh!

Try applying a hot water bottle to the affected region or by taking a hot bath. A soothing hot oil message also helps in this condition. Stress, depression, poor posture, etc can cause pinched nerve.

Good luck!

I'm back to about 99%. It just gets stiff once in awhile. I'm doing some PT twice a week but otherwise, no other treatments.
