Any virus whose features shout global pandemic is a cause for concern and often times panic. The swine flu is a new strain of the influenza virus that contains a blend of swine, avian, and human influenza virus genes. Is this another case of the media blowing things out of proportion? The medical community does not know the answer to this question yet. Let’s not forget, however, the most infamous pandemic in 1918–19 that killed at least 40 million people in roughly a year. It is doubtful that the swine flu will be of such great proportion.


The CDC has expressed doubt that the current flu vaccine will be of benefit. The swine flu can most likely be transferred by aerosolized respiratory contents and skin to skin contact. Like with the regular flu virus, symptoms include fever, muscle aches, runny nose, congestion, sore throat, and fatigue. This virus may also have additional features of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If your doctor’s suspicion is high, he or she may prescribe Tamiflu and Relenza, the two antiviral medications shown to have sensitivity against the virus, within the first 48 hours of symptoms. You can do a lot to prevent getting the Swine Flu. Obvious measures such as frequent hand washing, avoiding unnecessary hand-shakes and kisses, and staying clear of people who are obviously sick are imperative. In addition, it is critical for you to boost your immune system in order to prevent getting infected. You should strive to get plenty of sleep as lack of it can make you more predisposed to a fragile immune system. Stress can run you down as well. Hydration is another important factor. Make sure that you are drinking 8 glasses of water between your meals. Stay away from sugary snacks and beverages that will take a toll on your well-being.


Besides leading a healthy lifestyle, there are a few additional things that may bring great benefit to boosting your immune system. Ask your doctor to check your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D has been shown to boost immunologic function. Not only can it help to prevent the flu, but can decrease the time course of an infection once you already have one. Probiotics have been shown in multiple studies to boost the immune system, being that 65% of the immune system is in the gut. Either consider adding kefir to your daily regimen, or adding a probiotic. Focus on the gastrointestinal tract is key when there is a need to uphold the immune system.


Mushroom derived extracts, such as AHCC (active hexose correlated compound) play an important role in strengthening the immune system and supporting the body’s natural defense system partially by elevating NK (natural killer) cells. Beta 1,3 glucans, derived from medicinal mushrooms, are polysaccharides that have been shown to be potent immune stimulating compounds. Zinc and vitamin C with meals may help to ward of the flu as well. Colostrum has been shown to be high in immunoglobulins and therefore a great way to help prevent upper respiratory infections and the flu.

Please discuss with your nutritionally oriented physician the exact dosage of these supplements. You may also speak with your doctor about more aggressive ways of boosting the immune system, such as intravenous vitamins. Hopefully, this will not be a global pandemic. In the meantime, physicians and the general public must do what they could to help prevent it from becoming one.
