Restoration of Snow-Trac # 1881 in black and white

Here is the story of the restoration of my Snow-Trac.

I have lot of pictures so we take a little at a time.

It all started almost two years ago when I bought this Trac-Master # 846
It had no registration papers, so I had to look for another machine with paper and use this for spare parts.

1. A lot of snow
2. ST4 B 000846
3. Home
4. Snowy engine. A spark plug has been out for years but the engine started anyway after some small repairs to the ignition and fuel system.
5. Inside
6. Sheet metal roof without roof hatch.
7. Rust and dents.
8. It fitted exactly in the doorway.
9. Ice scrapers is apparently unusual.
10. I have no idea why the warning sign are in French.

To be continued ...

I noticed a heater hose running from the engine bay to your inside. Can you tell me more about it.

the heater hose is comming from that wabesto fuel burning heater mounted under the dash which is a waste of gas because the fresh air heat thah engine has makes too much heat anyway

dds has the right answer but in this case, someone has cut off the heater boxes.

i have modified my heater boxes so they would clear the axles and my heater would work i suppose that you will be doing a restoration an so i would mdify the boxes to work again than use the wabesto for standby heat as it is an expensive heater and nice to have

I take this opportunity to thank everyone here on the Forum for all the info that has been very useful during the restoration.
Special thanks to Lyndon for "What every ST4 Owner should know" and all other facts and stories.

In September 2010 I bought this Snow-Trac # 1881
The previous owner had intended to restore it but it had been untouched for many years.

1. The new Snow-Trac...
2. ...with high cab...
3. ...the paint is coming off...
4. ...but the body is in pretty good condition.
5. Engine is not working.
6. Rust on the variator system
7. Why is it always a big mess inside a Snow-Trac?

Since I do not like the look of the high cab the plan was to use the low cab from # 846
My friends felt I was insane who filled the garage and yard with scrap.

1. Here is # 846 now with the high cab.

Unfortunately it will not happen, this machine is used for spare parts and now missing many important components.

I could have used those ice scrapers last winter. Thanks for the close up photos. It may be my next project.

When I managed to start the engine after a few minor repairs to the ignition and fuel system, I noticed that the synchronization on the third gear was poor. I would have to remove the engine and transmission
It is now October 23 2010 and the first snow has arrived.
The gearbox on the parts machine jumps out of second gear, maybe it's an adjustment thing but I did not want to stand out in the cold and remove the transmission of it. Finding a new gearbox that works must be easier.

1. The seat needs a little work.
2. Front end also needs some work.
3. Maybe I should take this opportunity to clean up the inside too?
4. Now I can begin to remove the heavy stuff.
5. Note the shape of the skid pan inside the cab. I had to beat the crap out of it with a plastic hammer about twenty minutes for it to be reasonably correct shape again!

There was a lot of dirt in the engine compartment.

1. Too much grease on the chain sprocket.
2. This was nasty stuff.
3. Dirty, broken gearbox is finally out.
4. A little cleaning is needed.

The positive side of cleaning up all the mess now is it will be easier to work on in the future. Good time to look it over for any broken welds etc. Good luck with the project.

Yes I replaced the oil seals, the new ones were a little thinner than the old ones but they have worked for a year now without any leaks.
I think that most of the old nasty mess came from these oil seals.

It was a pain to sandblast variator components outdoors in -20°C (-4°F)

1. Plenty of rust.
2. Everything did not come apart easily.
3. Finally got the piece out and got a new manufactured.
4. It's fun to watch paint dry.

Now comes the fun job, time to reassemble everything.

1. Paint removed on the outside and transaxle is back in the engine compartment, which has a new nice red paint.
2. Some variator components reassembled.
Note to self: It's impossible to mount variator pulleys with the C-shaped ST-25 in place.
