Default Internal Emails Reveal Facebook’s Cutthroat, Anti-Competitive Business Practices

Internal Emails Reveal Facebook’s Cutthroat, Anti-Competitive Business Practices
by LUCAS NOLAN 5 Dec 2018

https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2018/...ess-practices/

Internal Facebook emails published by U.K. MP’s reveal some of Facebook’s most anti-competitive business practices, including cutting off competitors’ access to their tools and in other cases, shutting down any possible competition altogether.
U.K. MP’s published 250 pages of internal Facebook documents this week after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg refused to testify before UK Parliament. These documents have provided a deep insight into the inner workings of Facebook and how the company deals with competitors. It has also shown that the company is often acutely aware of the consequences of their actions but chooses to go ahead with them anyway in order to turn a profit or gain market dominance.

In an email dated January 24 2013, Facebook’s Vice President of Global Operations and Media Partnerships, Justin Osofsky, wrote to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, saying:

Quote:
Twitter launched Vine today which lets you shoot multiple short video segments to make one single,6-second video.

As part of their NUX, you can find friends via FB. Unless anyone raises objections, we will shut down their friends API access today.

We’ve prepared reactive PR, and I will let Jana know our decision.
The Facebook CEO replied very simply to Osofsky saying:

Quote:
Yup, go for it.
Further documents reveal that the Facebook CEO also personally reviews lists of competitors and decides how they should be treated:

Quote:
Strategic competitors: We maintain a small list of strategic competitors that Mark personally reviewed. Apps produced by the companies on this list are subject to a number of restrictions outlined below. Any usage beyond that specified is not permitted without Mark level sign-off.

Ad services: All developers, save strategic competitors (above), may use our ads services. The reciprocity for these services is clear: money in exchange for new or re-engaged users. In terms of oversight/policy enforcement, we follow the standard ads creative review process.

App services: All developers, save strategic competitors (above), may use our app services. The reciprocity for these services is clear: money in exchange for CPU, data storage and network bandwidth. In terms of oversight/policy enforcement, we will reactive handle any strategic competitors that we discover using these services.
Combined with the news that Facebook considered charging developers for access to user data, it seems that Facebook keeps a tighter hold over their platform than was previously believed.

Damian Collins, the chair of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee who released the documents, revealed the committee’s reasoning for doing so in a tweet stating that the committee felt that they have not “had straight answers from Facebook on these important issues,” which led to them releasing the documents.

We don’t feel we have had straight answers from Facebook on these important issues, which is why we are releasing the documents.

We need a more public debate about the rights of social media users and the smaller businesses who are required to work with the tech giants. I hope that our committee investigation can stand up for them.

I look forward to the day Zuckerberg looses it all..

And the 4 giant buildings he built in Altoona Iowa are no longer FB property. From what I understand there are few people who actually work in them, so job loss will not be a big deal. Must take a lot of electricity to run them, as in the middle of their campus is an electrical sub station...

That smug little prick deserves to get a big lesson in his life. Hopefully he will do it to himself.

Looks like he is on the way to self destruction, so let him...

Regards, Kirk

If Facebook folded tomorrow, a lot of people would lose their minds.
It's a good social media outlet for keeping up with friends and family.
Many of our forum family are on there.
That I know for sure, not just from here- but from netcookingtalk as well.

Zuckerberg would do well to keep it like it was in the beginning: a place to be yourself within the group of family and friends.
It's gone way beyond that now into a whole different thing.

It wouldn't surprise me if within the next couple of years someone out there creates a new place similar.
I don't think Myspace is even a thing these days.

Report: Facebook ‘Internal Tensions’ Reaching ‘Boiling Point’
by CHARLIE NASH 5 Dec 2018

https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2018/...boiling-point/

“Internal tensions” at Facebook are reportedly reaching a “boiling point,” with the company divided into three factions.
According to BuzzFeed News, “after more than a year of bad press, internal tensions are reaching a boiling point and are now spilling out into public view.”

“Internally, the conflict seems to have divided Facebook into three camps: those loyal to Zuckerberg and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg; those who see the current scandals as proof of a larger corporate meltdown; and a group who see the entire narrative — including the portrayal of the company’s hiring of communications consulting firm Definers Public Affairs — as examples of biased media attacks,” BuzzFeed News explained. “Current and former employees describe a tense and, at times, hostile atmosphere inside the company, one in which both senior employees and even staunch loyalists are contemplating their futures.”

One former Facebook employee told BuzzFeed News, “It’s otherwise rational, sane people who’re in Mark’s orbit spouting full-blown anti-media rhetoric, saying that the press is ganging up on Facebook… It’s the bunker mentality. These people have been under siege for 600 days now. They’re getting tired, getting cranky — the only survival strategy is to quit or fully buy in.”

Another former employee claimed workers “now have burner phones to talk shit about the company — not even to reporters, just to other employees,” while many are reportedly hoping for Zuckerberg to be replaced in a similar fashion to how former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick was replaced by Dara Khosrowshahi in 2017 following bad publicity surrounding the company and Kalanick.

I've been integrating (and helping other very large corporate customers) integrate the Facebook mobile sdk's for the last 5 years. The contract terms that Facebook requires every developer to agree to are very restrictive. Facebook rarely enforces them but if your app is successful and attracts the attention of Facebook then you better have all your ducks in a row.

Basically, any mobile app that allows you to "Login with Facebook|Google|Twitter" is supposed to be using those company's software development kits - which means they are running the companies code - which means all that fun tracking stuff is getting run to.
