Default New member just introducing myself, sort of

I say sort of introducing myself because even though this forum is basically an anonymous forum, in that you do not know me personally, I am an amateur poker player who has plans to turn professional soon, if not by this summer, by January of 2017 for sure. So its in my nature to keep my cards close to the chest and do what I can to keep from revealing my hand until the last moment, lol.

So all I will say for now is that I am just shy of 50, I'm a white male, I've never been married, but I have a couple kids, or more accurately, adult children. I went to 4 years of college where my major was something in or close to the the wide realm of philosophy, but I do not work in my field of study. I served in the Army for 4 years and the Army Reserve for a few more after I got out of the Regular Army. I've been both a liberal Democrat and a Conservative Republican for parts of my life, but I wouldn't call myself either of those things at this time. I would not claim to be an absolute independent either, as I do still lean just slightly towards the Republican or Conservative side, but for at least a decade, leading up to this year's political season, I completely ignored everything and anything to do with politics. I have one close family member who is a diehard liberal Democrat, and another close family member who is a diehard conservative Republican, so the best way to keep the peace with my family is/was to keep far away from politics.

But this recent election season has just been far too interesting to avoid, and without trying, I've gotten sucked in again.

I can not say that I support any one candidate but I'm a person who used to have very, VERY strong opinions about things having to do with everything from religion to politics to sports to relationships, I absolutely HATE the entire PC movement and so I have to admit to liking what Trump has added to this year's election season, but I still haven't made up my mind about him yet, so I'm open minded about him, I could be convinced to hate him just as easily as I could be convinced to love him or more likely, I will continue to simply not know what to think about him. But as people get older, in general, they figure out that the world isn't as black and white as they thought it was when they were in their teens and/or early 20s, so my views now are more open minded, in general, then they were in the past.

But I've recently set my children free, off into the big world, on their own, and after a short time to pay off some of the remaining debts that came about in raising them, I'm now moving into a new phase of my life, one where I will be more free to do whatever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want. And one of the things I want to do now is reengage myself in the world of politics and/or religion/philosophy in some way. How am I going to do that, I haven't figured out yet, but I recently found this forum and knew right away that it would be a place I'd enjoy expressing myself on occasion and reading what others post.

I may add more to this Intro in the future, or I may delete some of it, but for now I'll leave it/you here.

If anyone is interested in knowing more about me, just ask, I might tell.

Welcome!!!! Post often and don't get too upset if you piss someone off. Things can get heated here occasionally but most of the time we like to think of ourselves as mature adults ... light on the "mature". To be honest, a lot of us are just cranky ol' buggers. :)

Stick around and enjoy.

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne as JB Books in "The Shootist".

Wecome to the world of ForumsForums. Semi Professional soon to be Professional poker player. How interesting. I'd like to hear more on that sometime. I do not have the patience for poker, so I don't play in any high stakes games ...for that reason plus I don't have the high stakes. But I enjoy a game with friends. What is your favorite game?

Kudo's for a great intro. Interesting.
Scott me up Beamy.

Hey Doc, well, the deal is that I committed to raising my oldest daughter, as a single father, so there was not alot of time and definitely not enough money to play big stakes poker. So for about a decade I played amatuer poker. At the beginning, I made a commitment or promise, I had 100 bucks to spend however I wanted, and at the time I hadn't ever played poker for money, I stuck to playing free poker in the bars. It didn't cost anything, it was totally free and you could win prizes given out by the bars, and back in the day some of those prizes were actually pretty nice in comparison, so I made a deal with myself, I'd allow myself to gamble 100 dollars playing poker and if I lost that 100 dollars, I promised to never play poker for money ever again.

And yeah, you probably figured out, I never lost that original 100 bucks. Back in the day, when I first started playing for money, the average game only cost 5 bucks to get into. Some of the bigger weekend games might cost 10 bucks. And there were a few select games where it might cost 20 bucks to play. And what happened was I was getting close to losing my original 100 bucks, when I got challenged, someone suggested that I was scared to play a winner take all game because I always seemed to come in 2nd or 3rd, so in the money, but I had a reputation of never winning. I was almost out of money, and if I lost, I might have had 5 or 10 bucks left of my original 100 bucks, but I felt dissed, I felt challenged, and I took their bait and accepted the challenge and paid 20 bucks to get into this winner takes all game and guess who won that game??? lol of course, you know it was me!!! And from that point I've taken that original 100 dollars and have turned it into 13,900 dollars.

At the beginning I was playing in 5 and 10 dollar entry fee games and occasionally I'd play in 20 dollar buy in games, which were rare. But over time, those 5 dollar games disappeared, and even the 10 dollar games disappeared, and the 20 dollar buy in became the standard. But it was ME, that instigated the new thing, the cash game, with a 25 cent/50 cent blind, at least to start. It didn't take long and that evolved into a 50 cent 1 dollar blind and eventually it ended up being the 1 dollar/2 dollar blind game. So we started with a 20 dollar minimum buy in, and that rose to 40 dollars, and realistically the average ended up being about 100 bucks to buy in with a few coming in with only 50 bucks, but I was the guy who always bought in for at least 150-200 dollars every game.

I was the person who took over running poker tournaments and leagues in the area, and I held more home games at my places of residence than anyone else, and I was the one who injected the higher stakes games and during those games, I was the one who made the kinds of bets and calls that caught on with other players, etc.. So basically I was the driving force in my community when it came to poker, including both tournaments at the local bars, and home games. In fact, some of the home games that go on in my town use tables or chips that I basically lent to them and never bothered to back back possession of the tables or chips, etc..

Over the years, I won several poker leagues that I played in, more than possibly any other person in my area, and I did very well in most of the biggest tournaments that were put on in my community, and I was one of, if not the biggest winner in all of the home games that went on in my community.

Now in the last 3 years, I've been able to make 2 trips out to Vegas, the first time I went out there with 1500 bucks and in 3 days I doubled my money at the poker tables. On my 2nd trip, I actually only had 200 bucks and I turned it into 700 bucks.

I don't do that well at the casinos in Minnesota, but I win alot more than I lose.

I've kept track of all of my wins and my losses over a pretty recent ten year period, and I won at an 85% rate over those 10 years.

That is how I turned 100 bucks into 13,900 bucks. Unfortunately I was a poor single father who was raising up a special needs child and I wasn't even allowed by the govt to work for over 6 years, from when she was 6 until she turned 12. So most of my poker winnings went towards buying groceries. But poker kept me off of food stamps. I'm old school, I've never been comfortable with taking charity or asking for govt benefits. So I spent all of my winnings on groceries.

But now my oldest daughter and my youngest as well, are off on their own now, and I've paid off all of my child support and now I am free to go back out into the world and start up a business or start up a career as a professional poker player, or maybe I will or can do both?

And Doc, you asked what my favorite game was? Actually, my favorite game is probably Omaha, because of how much less luck seems to come into play. But I rarely play Omaha, and I've concentrated the vast majority of my attention on Texas Hold Em, the game they always show on TV.

And I've done very well at tournament style Hold Em, but the past 5-7 years I've concentrated on and played more cash games and far fewer tournaments. So if I had a choice right now, 99% of the time I'd choose a cash game or table over tournament play. You can win hundreds of dollars in one single hand at a cash game or cash table, while in contrast, you can play for hours in a tournament and do really well, and still win nothing at all. And the winners in tournaments have to pay taxes on their winnings, while no one that wins money at a cash table ever pays any taxes. lol I'm not an idiot. Cash games are the best way to make the most money.

Well, not sure you wanted to read that much about poker, so I'll shut up now. Hope you enjoyed the read, but if not, sorry.

Interesting. And I have a special needs child also. She had a brain cancer at 17. No one had survived that cancer so she is the first one. The treatment badly damaged her. She went from a straight A student to someone who cannot live alone. She functions somewhere around the ten year old level. It's really hard isn't it? There are times when you just want to scream and others when you are thankful that your child is still alive.
A hug is a great gift. One size fits all and it is easy to exchange.

Yes, it is really hard Leni. Wow, 17, that is just far too young to have cancer. Sometimes life is just not fair, not even close to fair.

I hope the best for you and your child.
