as long as you can feed it the volume you should be ok. in the late 80's and early 90's ford used 2 fuel pumps the lift pump was an intake pump this did 2 things it fed the boost pump and switched tanks with a valve block that was pressure activated. the boost pump was located on the frame under the cab and was never intended to suck it stepped fuel pressure up to a max of 65psi, the rail is flooded at high pressure and excess pressure is blead off through the fuel pressure regulator back to the tank. the reason ford put the pumps in the tank were to fight off vapor lock, and the pumps had to work less to pump at the source, and presumably lasted longer
