so last spring i took my cat to work and had a good time driving it out on richmond ridge after hours.
then it was time to call it a season and take it home. decided to drive down the front side of aspen mountain via spar gulch. bad idea. about 2/3 of the way down i locked up the original 36hp engine starving two rod bearings of oil and bending a rod. it turned into a long day. hiked the rest of the way down, grabbed a snowmobile, rode that up, swapped out for a bombardier work cat, drove that down and proceeded to tow my cat by myself at first, then opting for some help from a coworker. got it down, pushed it onto the tilt trailer with the blade of the work cat, did a number on the rear door in the process. then towed it home to the grand valley and put it in the back of my mind for the summer.
now the colorado cat jamboree is upon us. a close friend donated a 1600 single port that had been sitting in his storage shed since 2004ish. I added a 1.5 quart oil sump along with a brand new solex 31 carb. i also had to.modify the exhaust to fit the longer stroke of the 1600. i never knew how different the old 6 volt engines are to a standard type 1 vw untill now. fired it up on a test stand last week and it runs great. will be installing it in the kt3 on my days off this week just in time for the colorado event. should be a good time this year come hell or high water.
