Default PB 070 Resto

New project

PB 070 DR
Vintage Pistenbully. I was looking for a private alpine excursion / ski machine that could be used in backcountry and have some advantages of a hydro machine without being massive. The little 70 comes in at what i consider a healthy balance between weight , power, and size between Thiokols and Bigger groomers. This one has 3500 hours, and runs well.
I will begin some restoration in the spring when the snow goes away. Although we are almost there now.
70 Basic Specs...8 feet wide tracks, 5000 lbs give or take without tiller system but with box when i finish it. Blade etc. Little Mercedes diesel, is excellent on fuel consumption, and all hydro components are in good order, although i will do a complete flush here pretty soon, with new fluids filters etc around. Tracks are the wide version, which is pretty cool, for getting into the big stuff up higher, and it maneuvers well. They have a few outside splices, i will do a little work on them, thinking of building a set of summer tracks for it.

Updating electrical system in terms of relocating batteries from cab to rear, more room for jump seat, and i have added some upgraded fuse systems. I have no problems with glow plugs etc, but may upgrade to a newer style. build a dual battery system for it, which will be completed when the passenger box gets finished and wired up.

Needs some love cosmetically on the blade and a little welding, some paint etc.

These PB's Came with heated mirrors, heated windshield, etc etc. Rear window is cracked, but better than the front. will replace glass in it. Replaced the exhaust pipe with a new one which will extend beyond the passenger cab.

Fun Fun, too bad winters almost up, but next year it will be ready for it.

Great looking machine. Which MB engine did they use on the 070?

I looked up the 070 and it uses the MB OM616. That's a great 4 cyl engine, if properly maintained it could run many more 1000's of hours.

Yes, I totally missed the replies here. OM 616 indeed. Have her in shop now for the summer going through her. Torques, and filters and lubes. She is an 1987 i believe.

Can Anyone find a north American modern match or two for options on paint? I would like to do some work on the cab, and paint the Box I have built for this cat to match this original color. Factory calls it: BASF Acrylic Laquer # GAT‐3446

I am sure that some Body shop or collision repair person can cross reference the paint code.
I have had good luck by taking a non-sun faded part to a paint store and having the paint scanned.

Silly question:
are the seats in the factory location?
is the motor mounted kind of far back?

Good Observation on the seats. The driver seat is in factory location.
The passenger seat I moved back for leg room. Behind it was the factory battery location, which I relocated as I wired it for dual batteries and in return gained 10-12 inches for the passenger seat to slide back and mount. The engine is mounted right where it should be, Mid center, behind the cab.

For sale at this point, I love it, but I may need to be away from it during prime season. If it sells good. If it does not and i can use it this season great.

Summer Fixings....

Blade Off, ready for some summer love.
Tracks Off, ready for some adjustments and addition of some new belts...
Had a small list this week. Fluids, some cleaning, generally getting machine ready for ongoing work through end of July.

Replaced rear window gasket and used lexan. This way a slider can be added for possible contact with the box. Shedding weight, I keep telling myself. The gasket was expensive. I choked a little when time to pay. Was as much as the lexan! Making progress. The side door panels removed, along with the stinky old foam insulation. Replaced with windows, which open up the view and cab dramatically. I kept the original 070 striped aluminum panels. They can be swapped back in. Excited to clean the interior and add some finish. Stereo, and Multi-View cameras/monitor install coming eventually.

Back to the grind...Block Heater Removal
