Hey everyone i have come across a 63 Thiokol snowcat!!!!
This is now my new project and i figured i show my build and see if i can gain some more knowledge about these awesome machines.
It is a 4t4 with a ford inline .223 motor.
after sitting for 20 years i have gotten it running like brand new.
next is tires.one question i have it what size would i need to fit this track and the weight? it had 6.2-15.
on the roof it has us navy with a few numbers and on the front it has offical use only with numbers. anyway to look up if it really is navy?

here are few pics of what ive done in the past 2 months of owning it.

looks like you have some work cut out for you. they are a lot of fun once you get them going you should check out weatherbys post on his 601 restoration also there are a few 4t owners here with lots of good info on the power divider and how to set them up. the rust kind of reminds me of my snow trac when I got it

forgot to ask where you are located as I have a navy snow trac it would be cool to know the story of why the navy acquired it. the navy snow trac I have was used to shuttle people from the airport at a navy station in western Alaska.

How did/does the power divider work? I'm having a little problem grasping the basic premise.

I havn't got to put my hands on one but from what I under stand is its a planetary transmission for each side of your rear axle allowing it to steer by slowing down one track or speeding up the other a lot of members have reported it as troublesome yet others think its a cool system.

I have all gears smoothly engaging but have yet to know because i need tires.
I really dont know much about this divider but on the passengers side with no tires i engaged while running and the sprocket started turning so i know it works. I am located in florida i found it in miami.
Im not afraid of any challenge @ 16 i dropped out of school to restore a 64.

Your gonna be a busy man. Does Florida get snow???

Could it have been used in swampy locations maybe??

The power divider has 3 settings for each side of the rig. High, NEUTRAL, Low. The power divider is nice on flat ground because it takes less energy to steer. However it gets a bit tricky when you are climbing and wanting to turn. The NEUTRAL can be confusing to the newbie.
