I need help to chose a project. The project needs to have a practical application. Preferably I would like a project that would involve many disciplines, welding (any metal,) lathe/mill turning, alloy metal casting. Preferably does not cost any more than $500.

How about building a Mobile hydraulic log splitter. I plan on building one for my son next summer. I will use matching rims and tires he has on his truck and make it very powerful for splitting green notey wood. Your biggest cost would be the engine unless you have a good one lying around the shop. It should be towable with brake lights and such.
