Building a track setter for Snow Trac

I bought a set of cross country skis so I would have a reason to start a small project. I was able to take a look at what they were using here in the Methow Valley.

Fab’d up the frame using angle iron, drilled holes for riveting, and found some pumpkin orange to finish it.

Installed the 1/4” ‘puck board’ bottom

I did not have any UHMW thick enough for the setters so I found a piece of soft maple and skinned them with a couple coats of JB Weld and some more orange. Found a piece of stainless plate to make the ice cutters.

Plan was to pull it behind the Snow Trac by itself but remembered I had an old DR Grader buried out in the snow I thought I could repurpose. Ordered up some sections of snow comb from Yellowstone Track Systems to try to lay down some nice corduroy before the setter.

First iteration is with a 120lb concrete block applying the down force which worked great but the drag portion didn’t work so well with my current snow conditions. It did lay down some corduroy but the snow was wet and balled up in the Grader.

Next step will be electric actuator to control height of drag and one for setter down pressure. I will have to upgrade to something with more power than the 1200cc VW or pull it behind a Tucker.

My Brother took an aerial photo of my tracks as he was flying into the local airport.
