Trick or Treating in daylight

I know our world has changed a lot since many of us grew up ... but trick or treating in the daylight is just not the same as when we would go at dark. Even my kids got to go after dark. I remember walking them around the neighborhood in the dark. We had hay rides going around and one couple would always have their grill fired up cooking brauts & hot dogs. Ummmm My favorite place to stop.

Here the kids are out at 5:30 and done by 7. Just not the same.

Same here Doc, and I think it stinks that it's had to come to this these days..:(
I live in a very small town in Ohio, still the kids trick or treat during an earlier hour and have done so since the 80s.

I remember when I was at the older age walking miles from home with my friends and no parental supervision.

We live out in the sticks so we meet up with some other people and drive to the new fancy condensed subdivision with the mega-mansions. It's actually pretty good there as the homes are close together and there are lots of people out.

Out where we live, the kids would only make it to about 5 houses and get tired out.

Our little town has a fantastic setup. Whoever wants can park their car/PU or van in a single block by the city park and it is called "Trick or Trunk". The parents can escort the kids up one side of this sreet and down the other and all the participants hand out candy from the back of their vehicle. Keeps everyone honest and the kids don't get so worn out. This is done in the dark too.

Since we built here in 1992 we have had exactly 1 trick-or-treater at our house.

Hmm, now that I think about it, I suppose I'll have to steal some of my kid's candy if we have anyone show up this year

We get the triplets from down the road, their dad drives them over. We have a family with several kids that live directly to our north, they moved in last year and showed up, so I figure they will show up again today. And then we usually get another 1 or 2 more. Some years we've only had the triplets. The most I recall ever having over was about 10. I figure if they make the trip they deserve to get rewarded so each kid who shows up gets a small bag full of candy, usually a toy or something else too.

I grew up in the suburbs and remember having pillowcases full of candy as a kid but out here in the country the distances are too far for the kids to walk and my daughter usually quit (even if I drove her) after making only 1/2 the homes on our little roadway.

I got smart early on. I always went as a hiker/backpacker every year. I would put most of the candy in my backpack so it never looked like I had too much. I remember being out for hours trying to get as much as I could.

Where's the "fat kid" smilie?

I mentioned it in the other related thread but like others, our kids need to be driven around.
All the dads put signs on their doors saying/pointing to come to my house. We all sit at the end of my driveway with lawn chairs, beverages and the RTV (for lights and a bed to store the candy).

I live right in the of town on the main street. Usually, we get around 90-100 kids come by. Don't know about this year though. High winds, mixture of snow and rain, temp around the freezing point. I wouldn't want to be out there. Last year, we ended up with around 5-6 inches of snow Halloween eve that came down in a matter of 3 hours while the kids were doing their thing out there. Could barely see across the street.

One of the neighbors use to hook a wagon on his tractor and all of the kids in our development went together. They hit all places and rode on the wagon. Then back to his place for a small party, adults came to the party also. When you think about it, it is kind of weird. The adults stay home, hand out candy and then go meet with the kids and other adults later on to party. ?? But it was done after dark.

You know murph, that's a great idea.....the tractor and all. I live in a town of about 15,000. The news of the day, with stories of the various jerks out there that get in the way of our kids enjoying the same kinds of things we did, affects even us. That might be something I can do to bring back some of the old days. Thanks for the idea....:thumb:

:applause: :yum: LMOA!!!!! Okay, this is hilarious! I've got yard decked right out in a graveyard setting. Last year, I had spooky music playing and kids were scared to come up the driveway. This year, no music(my stereo just died on me the other day) but I've got a fake leg hanging out of the front steps. Kids are all excited to see the decorations, come running up then come to a dead stop at the site of that leg. Some are too scared to come up the stairs for candy!:applause:

It's dark here. Most years we load everyone in the "red neck truck" and go raid the 'burbs'. Great fun.

Now here I sit all by myself and the girls are all about doing different things.

Guess I'll go feed the dogs.

I don't have a better story but I have a different one. I grew up a city boy, just asphalt and concrete, I had two choices either the tenements and projects where people were pretty poor and gave out popcorn or cookies or trick or treat in the local bars, 15-20 in the neighborhood, and get money. On a good night I could make $20-25, my paper route paid about $8-10 a week.

Nobody comes trick or treating here, it is totally ignored, and I park my broomstick in the porch too (it is there all year round) - sad isn't it? Maybe I will have to come over to America to see how it is done! I have my long black cape ready and my bat is hanging in the back window of my caravan too....

This year was the most light ever as we did not return to standard time. We are on Daylight Savings time until this coming weekend. I have to wonder if they purposely made the switch after halloween or if it was even taken into consideration?
No one came to our house anyway ...our boy was passing out candy at the local store and he said very few even showed up there and it's in the middle of town.

Trick-or-Treating started by me around 6:15p as the sun was beginning to set and went on until about 8:30-9:00p. It was a bigger than normal turnout this year for the kids in my county have today off of school.

None again this year.

Maybe next year I'll open the gate out at the end of the driveway. :thumb:

Just Kidding!!! However, you can't see my house from the road and the greeting crew of two German Shepherds sort of looks intimidating if someone were to just drive up.

If I may ask (and a little off subject), what model do you have? Mrs. Zoom has what I believe to be a pretty good one. She can and does ride it for hours many times a week. :hide:

They were out in droves here. Warm weather (first time in four years) and Day Light Savings made it the best night ever.

There was a side affect though. There were so many trick or treaters out that even though our kids went to more houses I think the home owners were giving away less candy in order to make it last. I swear our kids had more candy last year. No - I didn't eat it all while we were walking! ;)

Conditions were similar here.

I almost cut back on candy myself. We give the full size candy bars and Mrs. Zoom gave me about 20-30 of them (which is normally more then enough).

First vehicle that pulled up was 3/4 ton truck. 11 kids piled out (9 out of the bed, 2 out of the passenger compartment. Well, that whipped out about 1/2 of my stash. BTW - 9 of the kids were from a single family. 2nd vehicle that arrived had 6 kids.

I did come up with more candy so my concern was short lived.

Bczoom in reply to your question of which (or should that be 'witch' ) model of broomstick I have - it is a home made version, but it flies pretty well, but has crappy brakes though!

OK, thanks. Do (would) you custom make one for someone else?

Get your brakes fixed!!! Maybe it's time for one of your famous restorations. If you do a restoration on it, please start a thread so we can watch and enjoy your progress.
