whenrebuilding a variator should the heavy springs be totaly compressed when reassemblying ??

To answer your question directly, I assume that you are referring to the W 20112 and W 20113 pressure springs that go on the ST 7021 eyebolts.

Here is a quote from the Aktiv "Repair Instructions for the variator":

8. Assemble the pressure springs as shown in fig. 8 and 9. Tighten the nuts (a) until the springs are completly pressed together and then ease off 1-1/2 turn. Hold the nut (a) with a wrench and tighten the locking nut (b) to a torque of 15 kpm (147 Nm or 108 lbf*ft)) and lock it my means of three punch marks in the ST 3006. Screw the eye bolts ST 7021 as much as indicated.
