Hard steering can mean worn out brake bands in the differential.

The oil should NOT be ATF transmission fluid. Use universal tractor transmission, brake, hydrolic oil, SAE 20W..

There is a pump belted to the drive shaft that puts oil on the ring and pinion gear. Make sure it works. many of these machines ate Ring and Pinion sets with AFT. Lube pumps caused some failures as well.

One of the members here sell parts for these.

Be sure to check your front flexators, the swing arm front suspension, for a "set" that will allow the front wheels to toe out, and make your tracks come off easily... These are filled with a elastomeric compound that has a limited life span, especially if track tension is left on in the off season. Common problem, usually field repaired by adding a block of steel to the frame inboard of the swing arm, to keep it parallel with the frame, and no toe out of the front wheels..
