I saw a cartoon character put his finger in an outlet on TV and his skeleton glowed. My finger doesn't fit into electrical outlets, so I guess I probably am safe, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna click on a link either.
But I still will issue a warm welcome to the new guy! Happy to have you here, after we get to know you we will trust your links.
Sure, sure he does. I think he even sprays all the links with Lysol to disinfect them from viruses and other horrors.
Fred, your post gave me an Idea, maybe.
One can go to http://www.virtualbox.org and download for free virtual machine software. It installs easily on most any PC. It allows one to create "Virtual Machines" inside your existing PC.
So, create a virtual machine. and load windows in it. An old copy of XP is just fine. No need roe a virus checker or much of anything. As soon as it's loaded take a snapshot of the freshly loaded blank machine.
Now! If you get a link or an e-Mail with a questionable file, open it in the virtual machine. If it does something evil, shut down the virtual machine, no harm done. Next time you start it, load from the snap and Voila! all the damage is gone and you have a pristine VM again.
Anyone with more VM experience than me see anything wrong with this? I use them, I am not a guru.
