This was apparently an attempt to create another bombing in the style of the Boston Marathon bombing that killed and injured people at the finish line.

Strikes me that every time they do this they just piss people off and increase the will of those they have attacked to fight against their cause. If they are the religion of peace then would it not make more sense to grow their religion by peaceful means?

German police officers on Thursday foiled what appears to be a planned attack on an Eschborn-to-Frankfurt professional cycling race scheduled for Friday, according to a report from the AP. Authorities uncovered a cache of weapons, including a pipe bomb, in a raid on the home of a suspected Islamic extremist couple in the town of Oberursel.

Security officials say they were worried that the couple was targeting the cycling race, which passes through Oberursel and attracts about 200 professional riders and thousands of spectators on the May Day public holiday. The race has been canceled in case the couple has accomplices or in case the pair placed hidden explosive devices along the route.

“Of course we talked about the Boston attack last night,” said Stefan Mueller, chief of police for western Hesse state, according to the AP. “Of course, since the Boston Marathon, it's part of the security assessment for every marathon in Germany, and of course this is true for cycling races too.”

Prosecutors in Frankfurt launched an investigation against the couple in mid-April after a hardware store employee reported that they purchased three liters of hydrogen peroxide, a suspiciously large amount of a chemical that can be used to make homemade explosives.

Police found a functional pipe bomb, 100 rounds of ammunition, assault rifle parts, the hydrogen peroxide, a training rocket for an anti-tank weapon, and various other chemicals in the cellar of the 35-year-old Turkish-German man and his 34-year-old Turkish wife.

Frankfurt’s chief prosecutor, Albrecht Schreiber, said that the detained man was linked to the extreme Islamic Salafist movement in the Frankfurt area and was known to police for 15 previous offenses.
