So the big three auto makers have gone to Washington to plea their case . Their Stocks have tanked big time and they are on the edge of collaspe . The unions have a huge strangle hold on their cash flow with all the benifits and pension requirements . Add to the fact that they just continue to produce cars that is not what America needs right now .
So there are over 1 million jobs at stake here .

Will the Union employees step forward and buy the companys or assume the debt and make the the car companies "employyee owned companies"? Will the goverment bail them out ?

I'm not sure ,but I do not think they will be allowed to fail . To much is at stake . The goverment has many Military contracts with these company's too and I cannot imagine the army running around in a Toyota Crew cab or a Hyundai Tank rumbling over the hill to save the day .

So if you had a extra ten grand would you chance it ??? I'm thinking about it .........

My fear is not over the money. There are so many diverse ideas at so many "buy in" amounts that I'm not sure any figure is correct. Additionally, will a Democratic President sign off on any program that might impinge on labor unions?

My fear is something that Pelosi said. According to her, she wants state ownership or control over the manufacturers to force them to produce vehicles sanctioned by the government.

The word for this nonsense is "socialism."

Pelosi would never get away with telling labor unions to take a pay cut for "the good of the state." So why should a business owner do the same?

No, your comment is spot on topic. These types of comments are the fabric that will put government controls on privately held companies.

The owners of these "big three" ought to be barking back her at the top of their lungs about weapons and the space programs.

If they want to loan out money, fine. But if not, then the big three will do just what any other company does--downsize and streamline.

Oh, but that will cause the lay-offs of tens of thousands of constituents.

Some one has to turn the light of day on these weasels.

When Alan Greenspan saved Clinton's bacon he was a hero. When the lefties needed a fall-guy for their own bumbling they went after the same guy, Mr. Greenspan.

Building cars is a business in a free enterprise economy. If you want to pick the fresh fruit then prepare to do some pruning from time to time.

Strikes me that Pelosi/Reid/Obama want to strengthen the unions, so allowing the auto makers to fail is not going to happen. But that brings up the question of how to save the auto makers.

I would guess that a bail out will entail a government take over of the pensions, and somehow I think there will be a new pension system put in place for union workers (perhaps for ALL unions?) where the government guarantees them and the funding obligation is spread to ALL workers, union or not and even spread OUTSIDE of the companies. So basically I'm talking about taxpayer funded union pensions. That will strengthen the company by removing much of the pension burden. It will also strengthen, and slowly socialize all pensions which I see as a starting point. Eventually all retirement will be socialized, or perhaps all but "the rich" will have socialized pensions of some sort. It also will help to socialize medicine simply because one of the main components of the pension system is health care for the retirees.

Yup, we're all doomed. Nanny state is upon us.

I'm with PW here I suspect -- if it's truly a "spare" $10k - then you're probably OK to take the chance on Ford or GM. I'm not sure Chrysler has that much future outside of military contracts. Off topic - I would not characterize those 2 women as weasels. Weasels have redeeming value and provide a viable service as pest control. (ferrets & mink are both weasels, after all) They're more like an invasive fungus or mold - so not only do you have to clean up after them, they leave a toxic residue that needs to be sterilized before their presence stops being a health hazard...

The unions were very strong in helping Pelosi and Obama in the past. The only way the big 3 are going to make is if a major change in the UAW is done. I don't think Pelosi or Obama has the guts to tell unions this. It is pretty hard to kick a gift horse in the mouth.

I have no confidence in the fact that the United States is ever going to get back on the right track as long as we have our Politicians playing in the hands of the Unions. The Employees Free Choice Act is one example as this will force many successful companies into going union of which only to be destroyed. The unions have one goal and that is one goal only, and that is to raise every one of their members paycheck so they get their cut. They don't give a rats a$$ about any business making money so long as their portion is there.
