I'm 21 miles south of KSC and 12 miles from the Delta/Boeing Heavy lift rockets,Ive seen most of them from my front porch If you get a chance you can watch watch up close a rocket launch 4 1/2 miles from Cape Canaveral Naval Air Station. Check the NASA schedule at their website for dates/times. Its only 48 miles from Orlando Int Airport. Its quite a sight for any first time viewer.

I've watched launches from the land and have been at Canaveral when they had one on the pad.

What really pissed me off is I was on a cruise and there was a launch that sent the shuttle darn near over our heads. The frigging cruise director was talking all day about the days activities but never thought to mention, "At 1:00 today, look in the sky over the stern of the ship and you'll see a shuttle go whizzing past". Ass holes. Reason #498 of why I don't like Carnival Cruise lines...

I don't know where you were out in the ocean but NO CRUISE SHIP are allowed leave the port when there is a launch scheduled....As for being out in the ocean there is a 25 mile off limits zone for all aircrafts and ships at sea during a launch or a recovery (landing). I doubt that shuttle was over your head as those SRB Solid Rocket Boosters are falling from the sky.

More info for you guys here.

Darn near over our heads was obviously outside of the 25-mile range but the con-trail was still quite apparent and would have been nice to watch when the shuttle actually launched.
I've watched from the Melbourne/Palm Bay area which is well outside the 25 mile range but you can still watch it fly!!!
