the only handle I want with any lawyer is the one to the gallows drop handle.

Geez, Danny. Why don't ya tell us how you really feel about lawyers?

In Ohio, lawyers are licensed by the Supreme Court. We just recently (c. 1998) started specialty certification, which is run by the Ohio State Bar Association.

Here, both the Supreme Court and the state bar association have web sites where you can search a lawyer's name for any grievances filed against them or find lists of certified specialists.

Welcome to Forums Forums Jena.
What state are you in? We can better answer the question as each state is different. Hopefully someone from the state you are in can answer your query.

It was a joke folks. A good lawyer is worth their weight in gold..........a bad one, well remember that thing about a gallows.

Ask people in your area for the names of a good lawyer. If you have an accountant ask him/her for the names of some lawyers that they trust. I've found that lawyers and accountants often work with many similar clients so if you have an accountant you are comfortable with, he/she probably knows a couple lawyers that you will also be comfortable with.

Realize that law is very specialized, you don't want a family lawyer for real estate issues, or a general lawyer for complicated business issues.

I never realized they had credentials. I thought they were issued a license to rob and pillage, kind of like a modern day Viking!:whistling:

Most state bars have web sites where you can check on lawyers. Also, check with your friends and acquaintances to see who they recommend.
Just remember, in order to pass the bar, lawyers (especially criminal)must have their sense of morality removed. It sometimes regrows, but it's unlikely.Sorry, jpr, just couldn't pass it up:whistling::whistling:.

The best bet IMO for references are acquaintances that have had the same problem. Past that, the suggestions of asking other professionals is a good one. I for instance have worked with lawyers, good and bad in divorce and real estate cases over the years, and have would tend to steer a person in the right direction. If it is a real estate issue, seasoned agents and brokers have all had their experiences, good and bad, and will often share them.

As for your original question, state bar and certifications mean only that you have passed a test. Not really an indicator of competency.
