Exclamation Why do our Navy ships crash into commercial vessels? VIDEO

Yesterday the USS John McCain crashed into a commercial vessel, there are now 10 sailors missing and probably presumed dead. This is the second accident in 60 days involving crashes between highly advanced US Navy ships and commercial vessels.

How is it that we have the most advanced and well equipped naval force in the world and yet, in short order we have 2 of our newer ships crash into commercial vessels?

Do the navigators think those screens are video games? Do we not have an actual watch on deck? Honestly I don't understand how this can happen.

"Lost situational awareness,” which left them unable to respond quickly enough to avoid the disaster once the oncoming container ship was spotted.

This was the generic statement given why the CO, XO and Command MCPO were all relieved of command aboard the USS Fitz. Another dozen may face non judicial punishment.

RADAR? Its one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. You'd think they would be watching not just the radars but also on deck? It was roughly 5:30am, so the sun was probably just starting to light the sky, not the best time for visibility but ships do use running lights and you'd think a US Naval ship would be sounding all sorts of warning buzzers if it was on a collision course with another vessel?

Seems to me a captain is about to lose is rank and command. Lots of others should probably be demoted too. Probably plenty of garbage scows out there that could use this crew???

I don't get it either. Several years ago I traveled around Lake Erie in a frieds 62' pleasure boat. The radar was sensitive enough to pick up net floats and the auto pilot would steer us around the net and back on course to our destination, Yet our best and biggest manage to hit other huge targets.

I cannot fathom how in the world these collisions happen with our Navy ships no less. We rarely hear of such collisions with commercial vessels, and I would think our Navy ships would be 100 times better protected and ready to take whatever evasive action needed to avoid this kind of thing. It sure does not speak well for our Navy.

I think there's something personnelwise that being kept under wraps in the cases of Fitzgerald and McCain.

We don't know all the facts.
Sometime "evasive" maneuvering is impossible due to restricted maneuvering conditions.

If you look at the photos of BOTH ships ( Fitzgerald and McCain), it it obvious that they did not "hit" the other vessel.
they were both run into.

Agreed squawker about the hits on the side. Both the navy ships must have the best radar that money can buy.

Good one Fred!

But the damage suggests it was in the way of the Tanker, and was hit amidships.

It did not crash into anything, it was on the receiving end. Not that it matters to a captain and crew, who should be atop of any situation regarding navigating around near by vessels.

Regards, Kirk

It was said the strait is a high traffic area. All the more reason to have observers out on the deck. I still can't believe radar can't pick up something that large and that close.

My dinky RADAR can pick up birds 5 miles away.
Little boats on the water that aren't visible to the naked eye 3 miles out.
I have MARPA and can track 10 vessels of my choosing, and can set an alarm if one gets within my chosen range, say 1/8th mile, 1/4 mile. 1/2 mile, 1 mile, etc

Ever been out in open water at night? I have. And you can see ships as clear as daylight almost, against the sky and water.
