Hoodys And Dungarees

A Trump Advisor Doesn't Like Mark Zuckerberg's 'Dungarees.' Now I Have to Defend Mark Zuckerberg.

I don't want to be Team Zuckerberg. Aside from the fact that the dead-eyed robot man controlling Facebook just plain freaks me out with his seeming inability to understand basic human interaction, the guy doesn't seem to care about much of anything. Not about making right the gigantic violation of privacy and trust that came with Cambridge Analytica running away with everyone's personal information. Or about effectively fitting in with society. Or about anything that doesn't line his pockets or increase the influence of Facebook, really.

But, well, dammit. Because Trump's foremost economic advisor, Larry Kudlow, had to go out there and demand Zuckerberg get off his lawn with his, "phony baloney—what is it?—hoodies and dungarees," while dodging a legitimate question about regulatory measures being imposed, in some form or other, on Facebook. He also asked whether Zuck would be wearing "a suit and tie and a clean white shirt" and behaving "like an adult" as he visits DC to appear before Congress.

Two things. First, for all his foibles—and there are so, so many—Zuckerberg already showed up in a suit and tie and a white shirt. (The cleanliness of the shirt cannot be fully ascertained at this time, but no stains were visible.)

Secondly: dungarees? Really? I refuse to believe that Kudlow is so drastically out of touch with the world that he doesn't know the word "jeans." And, OK, fine: Zuckerberg's carefully curated "casual" look is bullshit, a feint to distract from the fact that he's a billionaire with the kind of power it's difficult for us mortals to wrap our heads around. No one believes that he's just some "aw shucks" kid who doesn't know what's up. That's just dumb.

But just as dumb is the idea that someone wearing jeans can't behave like an adult. A suit and tie might signal traditional respectability. And jeans and hoodie might signal new-school casualness. But "casual" does not equal "juvenile."

The idea that jeans can't be worn by power brokers—responsible and irresponsible alike—is ridiculous. It's a brave new world of style out there. Before Larry starts writing off Zuck for his style choices, maybe he should join the rest of us here in 2018, where jeans aren't "dungarees" and wearing them doesn't render you disreputable—or exempt you from real-life scrutiny for your business decisions.

And then maybe, just maybe, both of them should start answering the important questions.
Larry Kudlow seems like a poor one to judge anyone's personal behavior he is a recovered alcoholic and reformed (?) cocaine user.
(Fun Fact: Larry Kudlow, the man who Trump just appointed as his top economic advisor, was forced to resign from Bear Stearns in 1994 because of his frequent cocaine binges and alcohol problems.
He has been married three times and seems to have changed religions and political parties to those who seem to grant him the most gains.

The man has also worked in some type of political advisory position for over 40 years. Perhaps President Trump would be better served by someone who hasn't made a great deal of money for years by sucking at the political teat of other's achievements.
