Obama to make unprecedented address to all public school students on September 8

The long march continues apace as Great Leader drives us toward the new America with nationalized everything.. .if you have a strong stomach read the word.docs linked below with recommended classroom activities before and after the speech (be warned, if you love the Constitution you will want to barf)

In a recent interview with student reporter
http://www.youtube.com/wa... , Damon Weaver, President Obama announced that on September 8 - the first day of school for many children across America - he will deliver a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.

Since taking office, the President has repeatedly focused on education, even as the country faces two wars, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and major challenges on issues like energy and health care. The President believes that education is a critical part of building a new foundation for the American economy. Educated people are more active civically and better informed on issues affecting their lives, their families and their futures.

This is the first time an American president has spoken directly to the nation's school children about persisting and succeeding in school. We encourage you to use this historic moment to help your students get focused and begin the school year strong. I encourage you, your teachers, and students to join me in watching the President deliver this address on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. It will be broadcast live on the White House website http://www.whitehouse.gov... at 1:00 p.m. eastern standard time.

In advance of this address, we would like to share the following
resources: a menu of classroom activities for students in grades preK-6
http://www.ed.gov/teacher... and for students in grades 7-12 http://www.ed.gov/teacher... . These are ideas developed by and for teachers to help engage students and stimulate discussion on the importance of education in their lives. We are also staging a student video contest on education. Details of the video contest will be available on our website
http://www.ed.gov/ in the coming weeks.

On behalf of all Americans, I want to thank our educators who do
society's most important work by preparing our children for work and for
life. No other task is more critical to our economic future and our
social progress. I look forward to working with you in the months and
years ahead to continue improving the quality of public education we
provide all of our children.
Sincerely,
------
The Pre K-6 Word Document
PreK-6 Menu of Classroom Activities: President Obama’s Address to Students Across America
Produced by Teaching Ambassador Fellows, U.S. Department of Education
September 8, 2009
Before the Speech:
Teachers can build background knowledge about the President of the United States and his speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama and motivate students by asking the following questions:

Who is the President of the United States?
What do you think it takes to be President?
To whom do you think the President is going to be speaking?
Why do you think he wants to speak to you?
What do you think he will say to you?

Teachers can ask students to imagine being the President delivering a speech to all of the students in the United States. What would you tell students? What can students do to help in our schools? Teachers can chart ideas about what they would say.

Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials, like the mayor, senators, members of congress, or the governor? Why is what they say important?

During the Speech:
As the President speaks, teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful. Students could use a note-taking graphic organizer such as a Cluster Web, or students could record their thoughts on sticky notes. Younger children can draw pictures and write as appropriate. As students listen to the speech, they could think about the following:
What is the President trying to tell me?
What is the President asking me to do?
What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?
Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?
Students can record any questions they have while he is speaking and then discuss them after the speech. Younger children may need to dictate their questions.

After the Speech:
Teachers could ask students to share the ideas they recorded, exchange sticky notes or stick notes on a butcher paper poster in the classroom to discuss main ideas from the speech, i.e. citizenship, personal responsibility, civic duty.
Students could discuss their responses to the following questions:
What do you think the President wants us to do?
Does the speech make you want to do anything?
Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us?
What would you like to tell the President?
Teachers could encourage students to participate in the Department of Education’s “I Am What I Learn” video contest.† On September 8th the Department will invite K-12 students to submit a video no longer than 2 min, explaining why education is important and how their education will help them achieve their dreams.††Teachers are welcome to incorporate the same or a similar video project into an assignment. More details will be released via www.ed.gov.

Extension of the Speech: Teachers can extend learning by having students
Create posters of their goals. Posters could be formatted in quadrants or puzzle pieces or trails marked with the labels: personal, academic, community, country. Each area could be labeled with three steps for achieving goals in those areas. It might make sense to focus on personal and academic so community and country goals come more readily.
Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.
Write goals on colored index cards or precut designs to post around the classroom.
Interview and share about their goals with one another to create a supportive community.
Participate in School wide incentive programs or contests for students who achieve their goals.
Write about their goals in a variety of genres, i.e. poems, songs, personal essays.
Create artistic projects based on the themes of their goals.
Graph student progress toward goals.

They want to start the indoctrinations quickly! I agree. Kids should not be part of the struggle that is going on and should not be forced to be part of something the parents don't want them exposed to. next they will be trying to get them started in a junior americorp while they are supposed to be getting an unbiased education. Don't forget the teachers union was one of his strongest backers last year. If I had youngsters in school they would be missing on that day.

Reading through the original posts, I don't see anything to get your panties in a bunch over. I was on the watch for anything hinting at pushing healthcare or any other social program/agenda issue, but didn't see it.

"On Sept. 8, when young people across the country will have just started or are about to go back to school, I'm going to be making a big speech to young people all across the country about the importance of education, the importance of staying in school, how we want to improve our education system, and why it's so important for the country. If this is all he wants to talk about, what's the problem? If it were 'W', would you guys be complimenting him on encouraging the kids to learn?

My panties are not in a bunch because my daughter goes to a private school and this is for public school kids. However, if you look at the suggested questions/assignments for the kids what you will see are things like how can you help the president. There is nothing in there that in any way that suggests the students can question his motive, only the implication they should agree with him and help him. That is mild indoctrination.

As for Bush, I don't think it would be appropriate for him to do this either. Education is a local issue, not a federal issue. JMO

Can anyone say Hitler Youth? That's what they are shooting for, where ultimately children will turn in their parents to the government over ideological differences of opinion. Remember the scene in Sound of Music? Same shit, different era. May God have mercy on their filthy souls for stooping this low. If I still had kids in school they would be absent that day.

Just a couple observations and some excerpts from the text:
•Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president.
Did you know that in World War II, German soldiers entering the Wehrmacht had to take an oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler, pesonally? Not to the Fatherland; not to the government----but to der Führer personally. I see a precedent being established here for the same thing.

These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.

And what happens if the kids don't "meet their goal"? Do some nice men in brown shirts from the Ameri Korps take them to a special resort where they mine coal for Chinese power plants, while at the same time they undergo "remedial education" until they understand what it means to disappoint Dear Leader?

Personally I would like my daughter to learn to question motives and authority as well as consider the long term ramifications of actions and proposals; if she is smart enough to do those things then she is smart enough to discern for herself if she should "help" the President (or anyone else).

Do think they would let your kids out on such an important day?
Excuse me??????? WTF, are they going to keep them overnight to insure they will be there the next day. the kids still sleep in your house, and you are teh one to put them on the bus in the morning. Let them send their brown boots to my house asking where the kids are at, and I'll tell them it's a floating religious holiday, national pissonacommieday, and take your sorry socialist liberal ass back to the classroom and don't come back until you are invite or have a search warrant.

LET them out? Hell, we'll leave at 6:30 a.m. and go for a ride to Niagara Falls on that day as an ecological field day, and they can write a report on one of the natural wonders of the modern world. Let the gestapo follow me to Buffalo chasing my kids. How absurd to think I still would not have control over my children. It should be "Keep my kids home all week" week, so the socialist libs can't play with their minds leading up and following der Fuhrer's speech. Is his teleprompter in German or Russian?

For all you who are afraid of your children's teachers, call them in sick with the flu. tell the school you think it's the chicken shit flu or the pig's ass flue (whichever barnyard critter is getting credit this season) and you don't want to have them contaminate their classmates. Probably be out for 3-4 weeks because we can't get into the doctor because BHO limited how many we could have in our town, and they are overwhelmed with similar cases. Besides that, they all leave at 5 because they are only paid for 8 hours and there is no overtime allowed, so that puts appointments further out. Hell, right now it looks like they might not get seen until February, so if you have a problem with this, contact der Fuhrer as ask for overtime pay for the docs.

Stand up for what you believe in, and if you believe this is evil like so many others do, then keep your children home that day. Heck, it will be fun to be home with the kids during the week. You're probably not working anyway because BHO is fixing the economy and you got laid off when the plant closed and can't find work anywhere, even with your master's degree in Humanities with a minor in Journalism(I told you that easy degree wasn't worth a shit for anything, but you wouldn't listen).:yum::yum::yum:

I received replies from both Principals.

Neither has any intentions of participating. If the teacher(s) want to participate, they need explicit approval from their respective Principal and so far, no teacher has made such a request. I like our school district.

I spoke with both of my kids last night and explained the situation. If the word "President" is even mentioned on that day, they (my kids) are to immediately raise their hand and request to be dismissed to the school office and to call me.

Ditto to that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want the 1954 version of the pledge. It would be very fitting in todays world of 'change'.

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

The Pledge of Allegiance

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth's Companion on September 8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country.
In its original form it read:
"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. At this time it read:
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration. Today it reads:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Section 4 of the Flag Code states:
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

Agreed.

But I'd more prefer to hear something from him along these lines...

"I, Barack H. Obama, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same."

Pisssst, you guys want to know a secret,

Most of the school districts in Iowa aren’t showing the President’s talk as well, but this has nothing to do with content or a few loudly concerned parents.

They didn’t receive a definite time until Thursday and with the address the first day after a federal Holiday, there is no time to adjust the class schedules of millions of students. This is a pretty normal response from a good number of school districts across the country. Just because they are not showing, it live doesn’t mean they are not showing it at all.

In the Richmond, at least, most of the school districts are leaving it up to the teachers to make the decision. Richmond proper will show the speech. Chesterfield, where I live, is requiring any teacher wanting to air the video, to preview it, then send an opt in letter home. I understand that as of today the teaching guide is gone, but the text remains substantially the same. The predominant word is I, and lots of references to getting a good education so as to help solve the worlds problems. Text is available on the internet from the White House. Also posted on WRVA, a local station, if you cannot get through. I, for one, think that the speech should stress the point that it is important to get a good education so that you can get a good job and not become part of the problem, but then, that would be capitalism.
